Hi Ginny, What kind of yellow are we talking here-- a golden tint? completely lemon yellow? yellow with green veins? With a better description or picture, it would be easier to diagnose the problem, if there is one (shich it seems there may be). A couple things that I can think of that would make the new leaves more yellow colored would be either a nutrient deficiency, or sometimes if Camellias are planted in high light situations (they usu.prefer partial or full shade) their leaves will turn a yellowy, or bronze-ish color. These are leaves from my camellia that I’ve had for about a month. I’ve never had one before and I’m not sure why a few of the leaves are looking like this. I know the yellow can be from too much water or not enough acidity but what about the spots? Any plant pals able to fill me in?

I can get some light bronzing or yellowing on japonicas at the beginning of the year: (a) light green or yellowing when the soil pH is alkaline... so I have to test it with a soil pH kit to confirm the alkalinity... and then I have to amend the soil with garden sulfur, greensand, iron-chelated liquid compounds, iron sulfate, etc. FYI: this problem takes several weeks to correct so do not expect leaf changes overnight. Apply per the product label. I always apply this in Spring since my soil is alkaline. And sometimes again in the Fall when heavy rains make it difficult to absorb enough iron or if the plants' leaves exhibit the same signs all over again. (b) bronzing: the sun starts to get stronger and the tree that provided the camellia with shade has not fully leafed out. It self corrects when the tree's leaves provide more shade. A lot of water would not be a problem if the soil drains well but if you detect the soil does not drain well (example: soil is clay) then you may want to either transplant it or somehow re-direct most of the water flow elsewhere (french drain, etc). A landscape/irrigation company can make suggestions on how to do that if you show them the area.

If you can provide a micro-climate where it can flourish, that would be great! ;o)) I will be glad to send you some of the heat that we currently have if you think it will help raise your zone from 8a to 8b. Hee hee hee! PS - cut off some of the weeds so they do not compete with the camellia.
