Awkward Front Entrance HELP!!!

I just purchased this home and am searching for ideas on a better front entrance. The small door enters the pantry/laundry room and the double doors enter the library front room. The deck is an amazing space, I'm just not so sure what to do with this pergola.. It's not very inviting. HELP!!

What a great house!

Is the front door off the driveway? Can you see the front door from the street? Which one is the main entrance? Also which door is the main entrance?

Some tips.... paint the door that is not the entrance, the same color as your exterior. Take a picture of your home and go straight to a landscaping place and ask for help. Repaint your pergola, add an indoor outdoor area rug, some planters and a some seating if you have room.

For the time being at least, leave the stone above the fireplace plain. If at some point in time in the future you find art you truly like, the you could add that ... but don't just look/settle for something there because you think you should want something there. Like recliners myself. Consider a pair of them. As long as you leave the walk path clear between front door and back of the house, how you define your sitting space as being separate from the walk space depends upon what works for you. A room sized rug would be worth considering and/or a long runner in the walk path might serve the purpose. You could invest in a couple waist high shelving units and put one on each side of the room with the back to the living/sitting area and the doors, whether glass or solid ... or even open shelves ... facing the entry hall. They'll need to be sized and weighted and/or secured to wall/floor so they'll not easily tip over so you could also add a lamp on each one. Oh wow, it's really hidden! lol Your furniture plan for the porch sounds lovely and I imaging having the door tucked away adds a nice sense of privacy and security. What about removing/relocating the bushes in front of the porch? Removing them might make the space look larger and more welcoming where as now they seem to make the space small and dark. Maybe swap them for some flowerbeds. It doesn't sound like you'd want to take on awindow-to-door conversion but it would look really great if you did. You've got a lot of space from an exterior view and having the steps lead up to the door would look very welcoming. You'd also have to consider what's on the other side of the wall and how that would affect the layout of your porch furniture, too (I'm sure you've already thought of that though). Since you have a family room elsewhere, you might want to rethink this room and create only a small conversation area left of the fireplace and, perhaps, add a desk/table where sofa is located to create a home office area there. If you can access the hallway or any other room from more than one place including this front entry room, consider closing off the door to that space from this room. On the right wall from the entry door to the rear of the house, you may need to limit that to furnishings that do not include seating. Take some measurements and see if the sofa fit with its back against the wall in that left far corner so that the left arm of the sofa is parallel to the front exterior wall? It may be that you need undersized pieces -- a pair of love seats rather than a full sized sofa or a "ladies" recliner rather than a huge one -- in the room to make the seating a good fit. Something that might be helpful could be drawing the room, to scale, on graph paper and then drawing the "footprint" of each piece of furniture you may want in the room as well so you can cut out the outline of the furnishings and see what fits where -- better than lugging the furniture around until you get it the way you want.

Two things that are not directly related to your question. I would remove the shutters. I think they detract from the appeal of the house. The row of bushes look like a barrier. Can you soften them by adding rows of other plants? Add some flowering bushes, perennials, and seasonal annuals. You could do a patio of sorts using Belgian block in the entry area. Do you have enough room for a pergola? A port cochere? Something like this, but not as modern.

I, too, would paint the single door to match your siding and blend in, and then paint the double doors a more vibrant color to catch the eye. Maybe buy 3 or 4 outdoor runners and make a path through the porch to the double doors, to help lead guests from the driveway to the doors you want them to use. Also, get a extra-long double door width Welcome mat, instead of a rinky-dink 36."

Give the pergola a fresh coat of paint and add some seating.

The 1st small door leads to the pantry/laundry room and the double doors lead to the library front room. Thank you all for the suggestions ill keep you posted!!

Let us be clear on something. Your “front” door is the double french door? I would find that confusing. I would probably replace it with a single door with sidelights and paint it a color that says “front door,” while minimizing the pantry door. I would also remove all the railing on the pergola. It isn’t necessary. And....rather than having guests enter from the end of the pergola, I would create a new sidewalk around the patio area, allowing planting beds along the way, and directing people to the end of the pergola where the true entrance is to your home.

AS much I like pergolas, I would recommend removing that one. Part of the problem is that the entrance into the porch, the pergola area, is not lined up with the double doors. I would suggest a different treatment, a narrower porch roof along that side of the house and reworking the path from the parking to the double doors.
