Comments (6)Judy, the foam protects them from any chemical you might use. If your hydrangea is the size you describe, you can spray away the foam with water, or take a paper towel, wipe them off and squash. You're going to find a little green to yellow-green soft nymph inside the foam. The nymph is sucking sap, causing the distortion. The original blob was all one big blob, and it might have been foamy at first. I have seen swallowtail butterflies hanging around the stargazers. Comments (4)Might be mealy bugs. look with a magnifying glass. Certainly there are some hard-water deposits on the foliage, but I assume you are not referring to those. Mealies are fairly easy to kill, take a spraybottle, fill with half water, half isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, (vodka works in a pinch but it is more expensive) and spray daily for several days--you have to kill the eggs as well as the adult bugs, and they can re-infest....See More- 3 years ago
