brand new stainless steel sink - brown stains/scratches
Comments (14)I am sorry Tibbrix, but I do not agree with your instructions. To clean a stainless steel sink, use Barkeepers Friend on a sponge (not a scouring ball or any abrasive pad), and dry with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. From the Kohler website: - Always apply stainless steel cleaner/polish with a nonabrasive cloth or sponge, working with, not across, the grain. - Do not use steel wool, wire brushes or abrasive sponge pads. - Cleaners containing chloride are not recommended. If used, rinse the surface immediately to prevent corrosion. From the Franke website: Never use steel wool to clean your stainless steel sink. Persistent stains, including rust, can be removed with a variety of mild non-abrasive stainless steel cleaners such as FrankeâÂÂs Inox cream, Autosol Shine, and others. Always rinse thoroughly after using any cleaner. As a sidebar, and I am sorry to contradict Hollysprings whose posts I always think are excellent, I have had 2 Silgranit anthracite sinks in previous homes with hard water, and neither ever showed mineral spots. This is one of the leading reasons why people choose Silgranit sinks over stainless steel. Comments (51)Sorry, for the late reply. I just saw this. No, we've had so many other issues come up with the build that have required all my attention, I haven't had time to focus on this. I do plan to use 30"-36" sinks. I will let the final cabinet layout dictate the sink sizes, so long as we are in that range. If I have an extra 3" of wasted space, I'll go up in sink size, or if I need a few inches for the trash can, I'll go down a couple inches on the sink. The main thing I haven't decided on yet, is whether they'll both be apron sinks or one apron and one under mount. Or, one stainless steel and one fire clay/ceramic/etc? Oh boy, I guess I have a little more left to decide than I thought! I think lead time and prices will point in the right direction on material! LOL! @vevmom, if your island is 10' long, I think the 33" sink will work nicely. That is still less than 1/3 of your island. I think bbtrix's photos above are great for helping to visualize this. (Thanks again bbtrix!) That island is 8' long with a stages 45. You'll have 2 more feet of island, plus a smaller sink. Let me know what you decide....See MoreDrilling stainless steel sink, am I overthinking this?
Comments (17)I found a stainless steel metal fabrication shop that said they can trim off the excess sink lip/deck for $110. My GC would be charging $100 to drill the additional 4 holes that I need otherwise. Taking this into account, I am debating whether I should just get a different sink to save me the trouble. I found this one here that would meet my need (offset drain, slight radius corners, 9" deep, ~30" single bowl): https://www.amazon.com/DELTA-95B932-32S-SS-Workstation-Undermount-Accessories/dp/B0921BFT65. I don't really need a workstation sink with all these accessories but heck why not? After all is said and done, the Blanco with a grid would be 40% more expensive then the Delta. @joseph_corlett, I found another post where you recommended this very Blanco sink that I am having a dilemma over. Do you think the quality of the Blanco sink is worth the trouble & cost vs the Delta one that I found? I believe the Delta one is actually made by Kraus as Kraus was acquired by Delta last year. Comments (18)"I don't understand the point of the offset drain? My Kraus sinks do not have offset drains but they have sink grids." @vinmarks - in answer to your question (and anyone else looking at this thread wondering about this), my comments above were referring to an offset corner drain. The term "offset drain" means it is simply not centered in the sink; it is in the back or the corner. Your Kraus KHU100-32 does have an offset drain in the back. There are two advantages to an offset corner drain. One advantage is that it allows you to set down in the sink dishes, large pan, tray without covering the drain. Many people (including me) prefer not to use a sink grid that you mentioned. The second advantage to a corner drain is that under the sink the drain and the disposal (if you have one) is off to one side. This allows a more uninterrupted area for storage under the sink, vs. a drain pipe down the center. So you would have more storage space under the sink, and you won't have to be always peering around one or the other side of the drain pipe to get your cleaning supplies, sponge, pail, garbage bags, etc. that you've stored under the sink....See MoreBy
