Kitchen Renovation with LED, layout advice

Hi all! Looking for support and feedback on our kitchen lighting layout.

We have 8’ ceilings, white cabinets/ walls, and have a hanging beam that drops about 8” down from the ceiling (thus the black bar through the center of the layout). We have no upper cabinets on the sink wall; there is a wall of open shelving on the bottom wall; there is a ceiling height pantry with flush fridge on the left wall. Under cabinet lighting will be on stove wall. Island will have two pendants 2’ apart. Kitchen task light will be either over the window or hanging from ceiling.

We are thinking of using 4” LED from Halo (color change on dimmer; 723 lumens).

Hi,

In your description you've not mentioned the height of the cabinets in front of the bay window nor if the shelf in the bay in the same height or higher. I'm assuming the cabinet under the 6ft window is short but you've not mentioned the cabinet heights at 46/48/49/50, are those full height?

In your original layout there is some symmetry (for those that like that in a floorplan) but many lights are 'floating' over the floor and would be behind you (e.g. at the table, at the two pantrys) thus creating shadows were you don't want them.

I have taken your floorplan / layout and made some adjustments, attached.

I suggest the task lights over counters be placed over the first 3-6" from the edge.

I suggest the pantry are lit with adjustable recessed so the lights can be pointed into the cabinets OR lit from within by mounting LED tapes vertically behind the door frame to throw light into each shelf (which could be controlled by a jamb switch). Interior LED tapes might also be used for cabinets at 46/48/49/50 if desired (might be cleaner that using a recessed like shown in lower right).

I suggest the walls to either side of the door out to lower left might be lit using wall washers that might be used to light up artwork.

I suggest under cabinet lighting could be done using high quality LED tape. You might also consider that for an ambient glow effect used in the toe-kick space.

I design with 'layers of light', I suggest controlling most lights (or groups) with separate dimmers (e.g. counter task lights, under cab lights, island pendants, table pendant, wall washers, etc. all controlled independently).

First, I would reduce the width of the island, especially if it is moved out another six inches to provide a 48" work aisle. You need at least 36" of walkway on each side, between the back corners of the island and the walls framing the FR. Second, add a pull-out cabinet between the fridge and stub wall, to make sure the left side fridge door will open fully. Then, if you move the range toward the window, on the left you can add a glass front cabinet the same width as the window, and have symmetry. On the other side of the window, widen the uppers to the width of the fridge, and reduce the width of the tall cab. Center the island sink on the range, with both DWs to the left (as you face the island), where it will be easy to unload them to the perimeter cabinets. Put the trash pull-out to the right, in the primary prep space, with a MW drawer on the end near the fridge, since most MW'd items come from the fridge. MW could open to the side, to keep anyone using it out of the primary prep space. Many don't like a sink back-to-back with the range, but the most time is spent prepping to either side of a sink, and a 48" aisle is sufficient if two people are working at the same time. I'd omit the peninsula between the kitchen and breakfast nook, unless you feel you absolutely need it for serving or storage. The UC fridge can go in the corner, with coffee pot on counter above.

I tend to agree about the hood. My partner has a tendency to make impulse decisions in the name of “funky” which led us to this hood. it was also intended to help tie in the black range which might have felt out of place with a stainless hood. We could probably replace it but then I feel like the black range will feel out of place. The soffit we tried to remove but it vents heat and we have to keep it. I do like the idea of potentially no island light. The original plan was some large funky pendants to anchor the space but that clearly deviated as well. I might try to go back to that. Same with the stove- I wanted stainless but we got this black one for an absolute steal. The cabinets on the pantry wall are a laminate wood color. We could try to match those on the stove wall with some shelves....I wanted to just put greenery on them- some cute grass, herbs, things to freshen up the place. Down the line, maybe we could replace the island as well. All white is way more my style. I’m starting to realize what everyone says: decisions to save money upfront might cost money in the long run. Maybe we can remove the pendant, paint the window wall, get some shelves, and bring in the stools, rugs, wicker baskets, etc and see how it’s feeling. Worst case, it’s...functional...and a lesson learned...

I'd also push the range as close to the window as you can while still having room for a properly sized vent hood. That gives you more cabinet and counter space between the range and sink, where it's most valuable IMO. And yes, definitely ditch the upper cabinet to the right of the sink--it looks awkward, both to use and visually since it doesn't match the other upper cabinetry. (But again, I'd just end that run at the window anyway and give the space to the other side of the kitchen.) I'd also move the refrigerator to the left to be closer to the sink.
