The great hosta drench of Spring 2020!
Comments (6)Deadline off the market? I've used the ammonia drench before. Not sure if I did it "properly." I think I need to wait until we get some rain as parts of my garden are getting dry. Or maybe I should just water the garden since rain isn't forecast for the next few days. I think my tree roots have cobbled up all the water in the soil. This is information I found in one of the journals of the AHS and made a note of. The key to success is applying the ammonia very early in the season. It is best if the soil is moist. When hostas start poking up from the ground, drench the shoots and crowns and soil around them with a 10% solution of ammonia. Thoroughly wet the leaves and crowns. Two to three weeks later, apply again. This will kill slugs and eggs missed before. "Don't forget this second application....See MoreAny experience with 1 cu-ft block "Pro-Mix" medium (at Walm-rt 2020)?
Comments (0)Deep in the murky past of gardenweb, I recall a number of people (who did not make their own) posted about trying to find larger quantities of "Pro-Mix" (commercial ?) potting mix. Presumably they were happy with it - or at least found it better than more widely-available consumer mixes. Wondering if this 2020-stuff is that earlier Pro-Mix - or at least "tailings" of that Pro-Mix repackaged for individual retail sale. The manufacturer listed is Pro-Mix, a division of Premier Tech. The named ingredients are not surprising - except perhaps that they DO NOT include "Forest Products" . . . To be serious, it says Sphagnum peat moss 80-90% by volume; Coir, Perlite, Limestone, Wetting agent, Mycorrhizae. (So far this year hasn't been one for sourcing components for self-made container mix, and am looking into retail alternatives to the ubiquitous miracle one.)...See MoreHosta Upright Vase Like 2020
Comments (37)Let's try this again, first time I tried it all disappeared when I pressed 'submit'.. I've been rather remiss at posting, primarily because I haven't spent a lot of time at the computer, but I'll add a couple to this thread. First I have 'Hands Up' which is in it's 4th year, and I just noticed today that's it's breaking ground already. Next up is 'Queen of the Seas' which is a new acquisition for me and will have to be re-sited for better exposure. Then there's 'Regal Splendor', it's been in the garden since 2012 and a reliable grower. It's been divided at least once and I notice last year some things that looked as if this plant was sporting. Not terribly obvious in this shot but you may notice a leaf just off center with a considerably wider margin and the shoots at the edge of the pot have much narrower leaves, you'll see that better in the next shot. This shot shows the narrower leaves and the shoot virtually dead center has a petiole with a margin, that's the leaf with the wider margin. So, there'll be 2 things I'll be keeping an eye on with this one when it's growing out this year. There were several shoots with narrow leaves and if those return I'll have a good sized division to take off and see next year if it is stable. Stay tuned! Pieter...See MoreHosta Wide Screen Shots 2020
Comments (69)Old_dirt, take it easy and don't get too impatient. Your lovely garden will wait until you are ready to get out there! We only have a half-acre here, but it keeps me busy. This was last June-all back yard upper level (we have three levels and this is the one I worked on last year-behind garage, patio area. I need to fill in blank spots, but will wait until last year's plants show themselves. In pic below, our Sam and way too many unattended-to-yet weeds. I worked on it , but hadn't started yet. Looking back toward patio. Note to self: divide Carex this year! Anyone near us is welcome to some-should have divided long ago. Moving to right around patio w/Sam again. Below, I interplanted the hosta with Chelone, heucherella, heuchera, astilbe, ferns and Gentiana, and other typical companion plants. The old bench in the background is all that is left of a square redwood picnic table set from my childhood which makes it at least 69 years old! New front side yard (driveway to right) looking back toward upper back yard. Will be filling in this year. Nothing is popping up yet other than daffodils which started blooking this past week. Warm weather expected in the coming week (actually getting up to 70 degrees F.!), so I expect to see some of the spring perennials to start showing. The hosta pips won't show themselves for at least a while-end of April?...See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
