January 2021 Week 2
Comments (56)Nancy, our washer might be the same model as yours. It was the cheapest Whirlpool they had. It was $499. It is even less fancy than the one we purchased 10 years ago....and that one wasn't top-of-the line or anything like that. With this one, it is hard to get used to no time count-down. I don't know how many minutes are left and that isn't a huge deal, but something I had gotten used to. And you just put your soap in the tub of the washer. Our last one had a dispenser (similar to the bleach dispenser). I don't mind putting it in the basin, but I wish it would let me fill it up with water before adding the clothing. But, so far so good with it. I will admit the champagne set is very pretty. It's very mild colored and lovely. But, when I do upgrade (hopefully not for a long time), I'll just get white. Even our "stainless steel" kitchen appliances that are supposed to be smudge proof, still get smudged. We did our grocery shopping this morning. Geez! All of you who are doing grocery "pick up", well, they're not picking up the items from storage...they're going through the stores with these big cart things with large tubs on them. There's multiple ones always in the way...blocking the aisles and shelves. They are doing a good job picking out your items. They carefully inspect each item before putting it in your tub. Those of us standing around waiting just have to be very patient. LOL I might have to start shopping at Crest, though. haha. We start at Natural Grocer, go to Sprouts and then finish at Walmart. We might start finishing at Crest. Nancy, I would be happy to take a few guajillo seeds. You know what's funny, until I made the posole I had never heard of that pepper. It's an interesting dish for sure. Instead of tomatoes, you make a pepper sauce/paste (for those of you who are unfamiliar with the dish). Very interesting about the pee/poop thing. The boys like to pee outside, so I guess I'll just direct them to the garden. And, Amy, that's good to know about medications. I'm dumping the chicken droppings behind the shop, but will probably stop in February so it can break down a bit before I put the roselle and melons there. If I ever get a grandchild, I'll have an excuse to get bunnies to be "their" pets...and that will be great for fertilizing. Maybe a pony too! (I'm joking...no one lecture me, please haha) Danny, how exciting! Pretty! Jen, I still have seed cups and trays if you're interested. Our plan is to clean and organize the shop on Monday, so I can get them to you once I find them all. I'm not sure how I ended up with so many. Maybe HU brought plants over in them. Amy, you have a lot of experience with lettuce and greens. Have you found that red lettuces do better in cold weather? It seems so...at least in my hinged hoop right now. This is the first year I've been able to overwinter lettuce and the reds are looking the best. The reds and the blushing ones....See MoreMarch 2021 Week 4
Comments (46)I've turned into a gardening Nazi. Came out onto the deck and there was smoke from 5 separate leaf-burning fires next door. Ticked me off. And then when they get out there with the weed sprays, that's fun, too. I asked them 3 years ago if they'd be careful not to spray when it's windy, and also to try and stay away from our back yard. And neighbor has been respectful of that. I like the neighbors a lot, just not their style of yard maintenance. The back of our property isn't yard--it's forest. It's that time of year when everything is turning green, but the yard is a mess with clover, dead nettle, hen bit, and others. What are those pretty little white ones? I know Dawn told us a couple years ago. I forgot. The Kerria japonica is in bloom and looks pretty--but I think we'll take it out once it quits blooming. It's not mentioned as an invasive here (yet), but is in other US places. I ordered and planted hairy mountain mint (pycnanthemum pilosum). I'm tickled to have it--but was laughing at Missouri Botanical Garden's description. Said most gardeners don't consider it to have "sufficient ornamental merit" to have a prominent position in the garden. Brutal. Paw paw saplings, American beauty berry, Vitex still don't show signs of life.Rosemary's toast and that's fine with me. I didn't like it taking up so much room in the veggie beds anyway. Must be an off year for you and me and "beef" tomatoes, Rebecca. I planted Beefsteak and had one lone seed germinate. "We" went shopping for make-up? AND--since it has been so long, will you be able to apply it by yourself? LOL We've been sitting outside all day. Me, purportedly to pot up stuff. Actually, to mostly just enjoy the 76-ish weather. Now, though, I am suddenly sleepy so have come back to the computer room. Garry will probably not find me and will think I've been raptured. He should know better than THAT!...See MoreJune 2021 Week 2
Comments (74)Hi, Y'all. Yucky heat. I didn't spend much time in the garden today. I did water a few things and harvested some bell peppers, jalapenos, onions to make chow chow. I already had cabbage and green tomatoes in the house. I had forgotten about my grandpa's chow chow until I was reminded today while visiting my uncle and aunt. So, I made it and it is good. And it's fun that it all came from the garden except the red bell pepper that I purchased. None of my peppers are red yet. We probably should give people a break when it comes to being native purists. It's good to put out the word and spread it as much as possible....but people want something to make their properties look nice....but are often working outside the home, caring for stuff inside the home (like shopping, laundry, cleaning), caring for children and all the things that children are involved with, helping with grandchildren. They're not spending hours studying plants and native plants because they simply don't have time. They'll have a few hours on the weekend, drive to their local nursery and purchase something that looks pretty, and plant it. I guess in some ways I don't understand why my chaste tree is so harmful to the environment. It seems like the pollinators love it...and it's not spreading. It's just a little chaste tree in the middle of my backyard that is covered with bees and butterflies. I guess I should study more on why it's harmful. Maybe I will when I retire in 20 years. Maybe I'll decide to pull it out then. But for now I'll spend my extra time in the garden and dealing with garden produce. I SO enjoy skipping the produce section at the grocery store. Sometimes I'll buy blueberries or citrus. Oh, and the red pepper today. Oh..and ugh. Lettuce if I want to eat lettuce. Too hot for it now. I just remember a few short years ago when I would load up on the fresh and frozen veggies/fruit at the grocery store. Nancy, the peppers you gave to me at SF are so awesome. The paprika grows "upside down"....and the 5 color jalapeno is SO pretty! Thank you for sharing those with me. I'm going to come back with a pic of the Survivalist Garden. It's all food. No flowers. We seem to be in a flower phase here. Love my flowers....See MoreSeptember 2021, Week 2

He went searching this morning and came back with this, suggesting it may have been this little horn, not a bell. How funny! I think it will work fine. It's awfully noisy--I don't think he can possibly not hear it! Speaking of naps, I just had THE nicest nap! It was a doozy! I also should check up on nolo bait. Grasshoppers STINK. Sure it was your keyboard, Amy? I've been having problems with Facebook--commenting on others' posts. I suppose I should try to train Garry on the cell phone. It's certainly not something he'd like training on. . . on the other hand, he needs to train me on how to sit down and read a good magazine or book straight through. I so admire him for that. Recently I got hard copy subscriptions to Nat'l Geographic and Smithsonian. He devours both as soon as they come. I had also ordered The Afghanistan Papers a few weeks ago and by gosh, he has sat down and read through that entire thing, as well. I'm a little jealous. Suzanne came over last night about 7 and stayed until 9 or so. Wow--I never have company that stays so long. SO fun to catch up. We sat in the quilting/everything room so as not to bother Garry. She remarked on how different the energy vibes were in that room. Wow--that really resonated--I'm sure that's true--for sure it's nothing like the rest of the house. No way for me to ever get bored in there! I think I may embark on sorting seeds there--probably as close to gardening as I'll get in the next few weeks! Garry and I are encountering a behavioral issue with Tiny. I remember Dawn telling us to not forget who's in charge, re cats. Seems Tiny is taking us to school in that department. I suspect it comes from the fact that neither of us has been outside gardening this past month. I'm a little embarrassed even bringing it up. This is where it comes from: these 3 cats are much beloved by both of us. Though I know Danny was/is right, that cats need to be kept inside, that ship had sailed with these 3/barn door had been openined--impossible to get the "horses" back in. And so every morning we go through this rigamarole whereby cats have to go out, then in; then out; then in. Tom and Jerry, not so bad. But Tiny has discovered (created?) a new game. He can scratch on the front livingroom window screeb. Garry goes to the door to let him in. Works great. NOW he has upped the game. Now he scratches on the screen, Garry goes to let him in and he backs off. No thanks, he says, and if GDW goes out to get him, he dashes off. So GDW comes back in, sits down. Tiny is right back at it, scratching the screen. This morning, took him oh, 5 minutes until he began meowing loudly to get back out. This has now obviously turned into some kind of game for him. I scolded him--couple times ago I threw my grabber stick at him. Now I've cme up with new idea. Get the water spray bottle. Told GDW to show up at the door with it and if Tiny backs off to spray it at him. We need one of you to show up as a cat specialist doctor. Other issue is my appetite. We thought my appetite has just shrunk for now . Now I realize it's not that--it's that I don't have an appetite at all! I was so excited about the big juicy burger I ordered from the Marina, and by the time I finished the 3rd or 4th bite, had no interest whatsoever. Do any of the rest of you have similar after-surgery issues with appetites? Okay. . . . off to my exciting life!...See Moredbarron
