That is also my question and why the fancy tile work too and really I need to see the whole space to even begin to answer the question .

There was already an opening so it was just widened to see through into the next room. That tile will be removed.

I don't think its up to code but you would need to find out in your area of the country what the rules are. please be careful.

I would need to see more photos to understand what you mean. Are you concerned you might hit your head on the left made cabinet? Does that stick out too far? Again the worry about the hole behind the range seems a bigger concern. My suggestion would be to take some photos of your space further back and maybe have the experts here on Houzz give you some suggestions. Draw your kitchen on a piece of paper that you can upload with measurements and a list of all the changes you want to make. You will get some kind suggestions and helpful tips for your space. I do think your wood cabinets are pretty.

Ok will do. I extended the opening to have more view sites since I have little kids. This is what it looked like before. This range hood was massive and the wide cabinets would bump it. Mice also got into it. It was a huge problem and we never used it once.

My contractor said it is ok but I’ll check tomorrow with the office who has all the building codes. If it is ok should I leave the hole or close it more for design? Or close it and add a over the range microwave with build in cabinets into the corner? This weird corner is driving me nuts to say the least.

I would close it and get a hood vent installed. One that worked, and that mice wouldnt get in. A vent is very important to have. Kids climb. I had two boys, that would have climbed from the otherside and tumbled right over into that range top. Not a good idea to have like that.

I agree with @cat_ky - I only raised daughters - but I spent enough time babysitting when I was young to wonder about how tempting that opening might be to small boys!

I’m leaning towards closing it. I will lose sight into the living room but I think it makes the most sense. My older son has never tried to climb it since the other side is pretty high. The house was built in the early 90s so this can be grandfathered with breaking code per 2 other contractors but I think also for design it would look better closed.

That does not make it safe or help you if the there is a fire due to the opening.

One its closed in, Put in a nice stainless steel hood that vents through the roof. Not having a vent is not a good idea. I am glad you decided to close it up.
