Large gray polished ceramic tile in the Master bathroom

So many folks are scared of a large tile but this worked out beautifully! No regrets at all! These were 2’x4’ tiles. Many also stay away from a polished tile for a floor but we couldn’t resist! We loved the high shine, looks so clean and modern.

Looks beautiful, but I’d be afraid if slipping. Unpolished for me.

Oh, I'm sorry. There is berber carpet on the rest of the floor where the vanity/sinks are. There is also a seperate area that closes off with a door where the commode is. It, too has white small tiles. What I would like to do is pull up the carpet, although it is only two years old, and put the same tile there as I put in front of the shower stall. I don't like carpet in a bathroom, but that is what we "inherited" when we bought the house. I'd also like to put the same in the commode area. Thanks for your reply. A tile that would compliment the white tile...would you think that would need to have some white in it, as well? Thanks, Bev

Ceramic Subway Tiles? Only for Bathrooms?

Does he have the tile he is pushing "in stock" as opposed to ordering it? I ask this because we were recently shopping for ceramic subways for our shower and the tile salesman told us that "no one was doing that anymore". He steered us to a stone tile which was much more expensive and required more maintenance. (And as luck would have it, it was IN STOCK!) My husband got major a case of "second guessing" and was worried the bathroom would look dated if we went with subway ceramic. I had him look at some of the bathrooms on gw and some magazines to show him that many of the bathroom renos were indeed done in ceramic :) We ended up putting the project on hold, but when we are ready, we will get what we want. Having said all of that, it may be that the travertine, which is gorgeous by the way, may be a better fit for your backsplash. Post a picture and the many helpful gardenwebbers here will give you some great advice :)

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I spent the morning at three different local tile showrooms, collecting samples. We'll see if anything works. It's been a challenge to find a solid that coordinates, as the colors of the calacatta look tile are hard to pin down. I may have found a warm white field tile that would work, now I just need to decide how I feel about a white field tile for the floor. Just like ILoveRed, I also liked this tile because it was a nice mix of warm and cool colors. The tile kayca posted is beautiful - I think I recognize it from another recommendation I got somewhere, now I just need to see if anyone carries it locally. We're trying to stay away from just using a smaller tile for a few reasons. It's a fairly large space, so I'm concerned a small tile might look busy and out of proportion. The house also leans more contemporary, so while I love the marble, we're looking to balance it's more traditional look with a larger more modern size. And finally, we really don't want to have to worry about having lots of grout to clean. I believe the Vallelunga is probably fine for some, and if it was already in a house I bought I would probably add rugs, use slippers, and live with it just fine. Since I'm starting from scatch, though, it seems like I ought to be able to find a solution that doesn't require all that.

Very pretty. I would think drying off your feet on a rug does the trick. Does it show foot prints? What is under the chandelier by the vanity?

I think a rug by the shower and tub will do the trick.

There are hanging pendant lights on each end of the vanity. The pendants are dimmable for a little ambiance lighting. They have a diamond pattern which plays off the silver/gray diamond tiled backsplash above the vanity.

We had a glass block window which I hated before but now it looks much better. I’ve considered covering it up with window treatments but actually like the light it allows in now. No one can see through it so it does have privacy. Opinions?

The placement of the toilet so close to the soaking tub is unappealing, you should find something for the space that offers separation between the two. I would be afraid of the safety of mixing a polished floor surface with water, especially as we age - it scares me just looking at it! It would be nice to add in elements to bring warmth to the space, such as plants and wood or woven items. It isn’t my cup of tea at all, but that’s why we decorate and remodel according to our own tastes and style.

I agree with needing some warm elements. We plan to add some natural wood elements such as a bath tray, candles in the window, and we will have a bohemian type rug on an angle by the tub.

A wood towel holder will get mounted to store rolled towels.
