Do not consider the fan as a decorative item...it is functional..Blades and motor should be same color as the ceiling so the fan just blends into the ceiling.Lighting from ceiling fixtures is usually unflattering and harsh. Add floor lamps and table lamps and tables as needed,on dimmers.

do you use a fan? if not, get a semi flush light.

Thank you everyone for your insights! We occasionally use the fan, but not often. I am leaning towards the lights you have recommended. Also, this room is in the middle of being updated. We are getting a floor lamp (Crate and Barrel Castillo).

We also have young, very rambunctious kids, so we need a durable coffee table/ottoman.

they're all over the place. (they're super easy to make if you guys are the least bit DIY)
