Comments (24)no-green: I like the combo of tropical fabrics w/ the wood walls and the tile floor. It's exactly like many of the beach houses we have rented over the years. Most of them had tile floors, cedar stip covered walls and tropical fabrics! JMHO, but here is what I think would work.... Find a larger rug to anchor the seating area. Have at least the front legs of all pieces sitting on the rug. Or eliminate the rug altogether. Change out the lampshades to either cream or white. My monitor shows your light fabric background as a light cream. Go for whatever the fabric really is. Find some botanical prints of either birds, florals or ferns and hang one behind the dinning table and a pair on the heater wall. The birds or florals could bring in the pink shades in the fabric. The ferns would be simple and classic. Could you make a cover for the heater when it is not in use? I'm thinking along the lines of old fashioned radiator covers that would have a solid top that could be used for additional display during the months the heater is not in use. I agree that a color wash on the dark bricks would be wonderful and play up the lightness of the space. Love the natural wood tones of the walls and I would never change them (think of the beach houses!). WT could be either light scarves draped over rods over the tops of the windows or very simple cotton or linnen type pannels hung on either side of the windows. I like the idea of the pannels to break up the horizontal lines of the wood walls. Have them hung wider than the windows to capture the view of your soon to be re-done yard! I like the simplicity of what you have now and think that just a few touches will make this room one you will love to spend more time in. It doesn't need to be made to look more like a decorated inside room... just needs to be tweaked just like you said!...See MoreLast call for tweaks on my layout! Questions!
Comments (14)This thread has helped me a great deal. I'm in the process of designing my kitchen for a new home we will be building (hopefully) soon. the hangup has been my klitchen . I've had kitchens a tad tight, but functioned well, and I've had the huge kitchen with too great a distance to everything, including carrying a kettle of boiling water across the kitchen to dump in the sink. I've been going around and around with wondering if the table should go in the center of the whole kitchen, (Julia Child style), or if I should I have a wonderful island, for baking and perhaps a small prep sink in it. The pros to table centered in kitchen is small steps to serve and clean up. The cons are I give up having full view of our woods. With the island the table can have full view of the woods at the end of the kitchen area, and I can have my wonderful baking island. The cons are it's a lot of steps to set the table in a kitchen that long. Twenty some feet seems long. I'm thinking the view and the use of the island would be well worth it. Comments (39)Ahh, it looks better with the jungle, hee, hee. I wonder if the plants would help the giant picture window feel less off kilter. (All the windows and doors in this room seem so weirdly placed to me and mess with my strong desire for symmetry!) The only problem I can see with the metal table is that we'd be tempted to put stuff on it that could then slide onto the heater. You'd think we were allergic to clutter free horizontal surfaces. :-/ But who knows, maybe the just-right piece will pop up to put in that sliver of space. I can see how it would help keep the couch from the heater. Thanks Kippy! Yes, I was trying to keep the piano separated from the spot where some of the kids do school. My DMIL comes to the house to give piano lessons every few weeks (bless her heart!) and the piano lessons going on while they're trying to do their schoolwork is very distracting, besides the day-to-day playing....See MoreAlicia Gordon - Question about your dining room window trim
Comments (0)Alicia Gordon - I was looking back at some old threads and found your post about paint colors in your dining room. If you see this thread, would you mind posting a photo of one of your dining room windows to show how they were trimmed out at the bottom? The photo that I saw in your other thread does not show the bottom half. I actually need to know how to trim out the bottom for another room...not my dining room. We have the same window trim and I would like panels at the bottom for my bedroom windows. BTW - Have you been happy with your darker dining room walls? We are building and are thinking of using a similar color to your BM Bucktrout. Friends and family keep telling me that the walls will be too dark for the dining room. We will have Pure White wainscoting all around the room, plus 4 large windows, so I think those touches will lighten up the room enough....See Moremtnrdredux_gw
