Kalanchoe Tomentosa (Panda Plant) stem issues
Comments (14)Hi Mighty Metis and Spapa, Hope bruce is doing great again (not the best picture - its neighbour is a stone rose I'm keeping there to get a big bigger before repotting) I'm writing because I think I'm heading towards a similar situation with my panda. A break-off branch was given to me recently by an acquaintance, I planted it just before summer, it really transformed around 3 weeks later (spreading its leaves, growing very fast) but now I see the lower stem getting darker, greyish and loosing density, it looks like its drying out. I presume the roots are also affected by rot possibly. I certainly planted it into unsuitable soil for succulents, the weather went from very hot to very dry constantly and I also planted it into a terracotta pot (I think it retains too much moisture with the wrong soil mix). I'm watering every three days once the top soil dries out in a hot and humid room. If you guys can see this post, I'd much appreciate a knowledgeable glance and comment, as I'm not sure what's happening here....See MoreKalanchoe tomentosa vs. kalanchoe eriophylla?
Comments (7)Photobucket is giving me all kinds of trouble today, so I can't post my pix to give visual differences. So, words will have to do, I suppose. You can Google images to see as well. Kalanchoe tomentosa is a green-grey or bluish-grey fuzzy leaf, compared to eriophylla's white-grey fuzzy leaf. The tips of tomentosa are most times edged at the tips (top portion) with a darker color (either brown or black), whereas, eriophylla has none or just a bit at its tips. K. tomenosa can have a scalloped look at its leaf end, whereas eriophylla comes to a point. The blooms of K. tomentosa are a darker purpley color & the outside of the petals are fuzzy. K. eriophylla has pink blooms ~the calyx are fuzzy, but not the petals (I'm pretty sure--haven't seen blooms for a while on that one recently). Hope this helps!...See MorePanda plant (Kalanchoe tomentosa) floppy?
Comments (21)Thanks everyone for your input! There's lots of articles out there about cactus soil, and I went with what I thought would work. I'll be switching it up based on everyone's comments. If anyone is curious about the pot, I just use it as a regular planter with lots of gravel & perlite at the bottom for drainage. It seemed to work for the first cactus I put in there (whose still happy with his home!). Thanks again!...See Morekalanchoe leaves are wrinkled and soft..need help and advice
Comments (8)If the stem is soft and rotting, then the plant will die if you do nothing. If the soil is staying wet at the bottom of the pot, the plant will rot and die. If the soil is not getting wet and water is flowing around it, the roots will not get the water and the plant will die. So these are the things that we suspect from the picture. But all is not lost. I have made all of the above mistakes, and I still have my plant from May 2010. Cuttings root easily and the plant lives on. I have not had success with rooting leaves, but nearly everyone else has! LOL A healthy stem will backbud and branch, but that is the question on your plant. Unpot the plant and look at the roots. Then you can decide if you need to discard the original plant stem. If it looks good, repot in well draining mix. 50/50 mix of c&s soil and perlite works well. If you need or decide to take clippings, let the stems callous and place in the same 50/50 mix for a repot. Don't water until you see new growth. Then treat as usual. A few cuttings - LOL My plant today - (mine tend to droop for some reason) Good luck!...See Morerina_Ontario,Canada 5a
