Varying window sizes in a dormer/gable....what is this called?
Comments (2)The first example is a Palladian-style window. In American architecture it belongs in a Georgian, Federal, or Colonial Revival style house. I don't know that the second one has a name. Palladian windows get plugged into all sorts of American neo-eclectic houses, though. The potential issue with both of these is placement. If you need a window treatment on this window, how do you treat the different parts? The classic Palladian window in the 19th century was often in a thick enough wall that it could be covered with fold out pocket shutters --the window embrasures were deep enough for them....See MoreWindow Boxes Under Dormer Windows
Comments (8)Your house is charming! I'm a fan of window boxes, but I agree having them on second story windows isn't a good idea in your case. We had them on larger first story windows like yours. There were no drainage problems, but I'm not sure I'd want to plant, replant, water and/or deadhead leaning out of those upper windows (though I did enjoy it at ground level). I think adding some color to the landscaping would be nice. Maybe some pots flanking the door with colorful plantings....See MoreWhat to do with this dormer?
Comments (42)I think the hipped roofs Mark posted are more elegant than the shed and low-slope gable roofs. Its good to see the drawings on the same sheet so they can be sized and scaled together (jpg's have no scale). That allows me to draw some rough building sections and corresponding elevations. The OLD SECTION shows a sill height of approximately 5-3, which is too high for comfort and a dormer well integrated into the roof. The NEW SECTION shows the face of the dormer moved 3 ft toward the front of the house with a window sill height of approximately 3-8 which allows a more reasonable looking gable or shed dormer roof better integrated in to the main roof. The dimensions would be more accurate if I new the slope of the existing roof. I've assumed 6 in 12. I believe the architect's dormer aligns with a wall below and that moving the dormer wall will involve a beam but the additional cost could be paid for by deleting the inappropriate new portico....See MoreDormer window replacement
Comments (7)Thanks for info. Since they'd be accessible if the piece of glass weren't there, I suggest you get casement windows that swing out. With any luck, they'll be a standard size. Also consider safety egress requirements for the upstairs bedrooms- if you need to get out in a fire, the rules are designed so you have big enough windows at the right height range from the floor. Casement windows will probably look like they belong to the house design. Awning windows aren't used in my area much, but it's possible they are used in your area. Take a drive with google streetview or walk around on foot to see what types of windows are used in your neighborhood....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
