It depends on what you do in the office and how much you want to spend, but I would: Get rid of the rug entirely and leave the floor au natural, but add a desk chair mat under your chair to protect the floor. Add a few tall shelves or bookcases, depending on what you need them for (files vs equipment vs books) -- Ikea has some nice options that aren't expensive and are easy to assemble. I'd add colour to the window covering (different drape? coloured tie?) and then decide if you want art work/photos and/or a corkboard/white board. If your peripherals (like printers, etc) are small, you may want to consider something like Ikea's Kallax series, because they could fit in some of the boxes, while you use others for books or baskets. I wish I'd thought of that before I got the storage unit I did.

@Jess. You're Welcome! It's difficult to get a perfect room and your needs in a small space. For me, placing the desk there, would be fine for these reasons.... This is a Dual-Purpose Room 1. Your desk has a light weight feeling to it, it's not bulky, although one with more storage might be better functionally. (which is still ok) Not a lot of choices for you 2. Because you enter the room moving to the left, that pathway is all clear. 3. You won't run into a desk at current space, when entering the room 4. Better use of the space between the closet and doorway, given it's construction 5. Visually, a better, more inviting floor plan overall 6. Furniture placements are more aesthetically pleasing (better balance) 7. Better use of space you have 8. Sofa & coffee table area are inviting and functional. It won't feel like there is nowhere else to place the sofa in your home 9. You will 'feel' good about the room and like going in there 10. The room might even feel larger

Oh joy, another back and forth with @WestCoast Hopeful! "General terms" refers to it doesn't matter what Mark's neighbors think, unless he lives next to the OP. And being detached from electronics is not the norm "generally" planning for offices, commercial or a like-minded residential office. Any visual layout should, and always does, receive specific critique, as mine do. Some of us put ourselves out there in black & white, sometimes you hit the nail on the head, sometimes you don't. It's not easy offering free design services based on an interpretation of limited information given and time constraints to perform it. You should try it sometime. Not sure what is "heavily critiqued" about Mark's sketch, so bringing up "limiting furniture under windows if there are peripherals" completely pertain to the credenza shown. The OP mentions a "daybed" which should paint a picture of being able to somehow lounge with a laptop, so priority #2 out of only 2 is not met. If I were to do a sketch based on reading the OP, I would probably show in order to meet the priorities you'd have to do a "face the wall" desk to also fit lounging within 9'-1" wide.

because of the windows, you're limited. put the sofa across from windows on long wall, try the desk on the short wall under the AC Maybe like this,,,unless you can do a desk under a window and similar shelves on either side or like this or on that shorter wall, do some ikea billy bookcases hack,,, or something like this, w/a desk in front of it collectibles can go above the sofa, or on the spaces between the windows Or, on long wall do this, with the collectables on the shelves above, sofa under AC around the entrace door, do these built in book cases
