Large discrepancies in cabinet estimates
Comments (7)Not trying to be rude but I think the terms high end custom and semi custom are thrown around too much on here to be truly valid. You mentioned your door style selection was limited in your custom bid. A local cabinet company does not make them custom. It makes them local or regional if you prefer. A tru custom company is always going to be higher on the baseline cost because you pay for a more talented labor force with more equipment to do anything you can dream. At a minimum if they do not offer custom color match and door profile match they are not a custom Company. Many people on here say they want a custom color. Specifying a color and match a color are two different things. A truly custom company can recieve a door sample of anything and send you back a week or two later an exact match in the shape of the wood and the color of the stain paint and or glaze. Semi custom is a lose term as well. Armstrong is a semi custom company that is a great one for example and hardly any one on here knows there business model is to sell to the public directly. When ever your custom quotes are lower than your semi custom quotes keep shoping until that trend reverses. You will get a better educaiton on what the reality is than any one can advise you on here. At the prices you are stating those cabinets should be made of gold. I do a 35% product mark up on my custom cabinet lines in my store and it is rare to see a price for cabinets in a kitchen spike over $20k to the customer in the size rooms you are talking about. Painted glazed and full old world distressed is about as high as it gets. Door style with a good custom company does not really affect the price a huge amount at the base line prices they covered their costs before talking about door style. Inset is different it is harder to get right. Any how our prices tend to be to the customer between $400-$500 per foot you have about 47' so it should be between $18,800 $23,500 Semi custom companies we use run our customers $200-$375 making a range of $9,400 - $17,625 the cabinet company used and the features chosen is what determines the price in the range. Their are cases out side those numbers but those are pretty good rules of thumb. At a 35% mark up I make about $4k on an $18k sale I think you need to shop around more. Your custom prices should always be higher than your semi custom Send your plans to Old River Cabinets in Richmond Va. They sell direct and can make anything. They have the best price around for true custom company. Also I see the pictures of so many kitchens on here that say they are custom cabinets but they do not seem to be custom made very often. Meaning the cabinets should have custom made features. It does not really matter if a custom company made your cabinets what matters is they made them better smarter. If you want turned legs on the sides of your cooktop cabinet then the box should be the width of the legs or your should have radius corners with futes or something exciting. I do not offer our custom cabient compnaines to my customers on purpose if I know then have no need of their talent. Why pay for the base line price if you do not go all the way with it?...See MoreHow is cost of kitchen cabinets estimated?
Comments (8)Quality Forest Council Certified American milled and sourced lumber products produced by American factories or individuals to KCMA standards that pay American workers a living wage will be more costly than Chinese made cabinets with questionably harvested wood and $1 labor if lower production costs are your first criteria. Some are even not too questionable in fit and finish. It's similar in furniture manufacturing. There really isn't any American produced furniture today. Consumers rejected the pricing necessitated by quality American manufacturing. 99% of it is made overseas, even if some of the wood is shipped from here. That's how your carved solid wood furniture is able to be made affordable. While I still can, I prefer to support more local manufactured choices that I can be certain meet standardized quality controls both to protect the workers and my investment in my home. For a good value product, you might investigate American Woodmark/Shenendoah cabinets. They are American made, and offer decent quality at a lower price point. You will still be paying roughly between $200-$500 a linear foot for a very basic kitchen with some small upgrades. I've done kitchens with $2000 worth of cabinets and $80,000 worth of cabinets, and frankly, the sizes of the kitchens aren't the biggest determiner of how much somone spends. Your personal taste and spending philosophy determine that. YOU are easily able to control your pricing in any kitchen renovation. YOu simply have to "just say no" to any bells or whistles. No upgrading to cherry. No glaze. No painted finish. No full extension drawer hardware. No full overlay or inset cabinets. No crown molding. No drawer stacks. No lazy susans. NO trash pullouts. No tall cabinets. No islands. Especially no to any glass doors or stacked cabinets. Those popular forum choices are all upgrades that cost money and are not part of a standard budget kitchen. If you forgo those, you can still manage to get some quality cabinets in your home without breaking your budget. Reading this forum or looking at popular decorating magazines can give you an unconscious envy and unrealistic expectations for an "average" consumer. Most of my kitchen remodels that I design are under $20,000 which is 10K less than the national average. My customers get good value for their money spent, but they have to be a bit more creative in some things and bring some DIY skills to the table if they want that "100K look" on that 20K budget. If they can't bring any skill sets into the picture, then expectations have to either be revised, or the budget will have to be significantly revised. It's a shock to many to find that they can't get what they want for what they expected to spend, and it sounds as though you are at that stage in your reno. So, maybe it's time to take that tile class, or go to a box store and buy some cheap crown molding to practice miter cuts or brush up on your painting skills. Or, maybe you're more like my sister who started her own in home business with all of the proceeds going to the "dream home" savings account. Or, there's my neighbor who just bought 3K worth of Chinese cabinets rather than spend the 6K that I quoted him for the same job. There is always something you can DO to get what you want. Even if that's changing your mind as to what you want, vs. what you need....See MoreKitchen estimate - white beaded inset cab with cherry island
Comments (41)Thank you all for getting back to me. This has been quite helpful. We took a ride out last weekend, we live about 2 hours away in NJ. We worked with Jacob Jr. We took a copy of our architectural plans with us, it has room dimensions and a very basic layout of the stove, sink, fridge, and island. Jacob Jr. will be working out a design for us and sending us an estimate. I'm not sure how long that will take, but we are very anxious to get it. We've priced Home Depot's American Woodmark and are curious how Oxford will compare. We were able to pick from standard cabinet colors and stains. If you wanted to upgrade, there was an additional charge and it is listed on each door in their showroom. The pictures in their album are absolutely gorgeous, they have so many unique ideas for kitchen cabinets. Lucretzia: I can't wait to see your pictures! Comments (4)It does sound expensive, but as weedyacres mentioned it does depend on the number of turns/corners you have. We had molding made and ours consists of a 5" straight board above cabinet, then a cove piece of molding above it that rests on it and against ceiling. We paid about $500 for the molding and about $500 for installation and that installation included the guy installing baseboard molding in our dining room that we had painted and ready to go. We probably had 35 feet or so of molding...with many turns and corners. So, since our installation involved two pieces of molding with many turns, and it still came in cheaper $40/sq. ft...I would have to say your quote sounds a bit high. What I have learned through this whole process is that when getting quotes, I quickly learned what contractors/installers, etc. liked to do vs. what they hated doing. When they quote high, I got the impression that they were saying to me "I don't like doing it, but I will, but it will cost you." So, we kept looking. It's funny, we didn't want to attempt it so in the end we knew we were paying someone to do it...fortunately we found someone who did a great job for a very reasonable price. Good luck!...See Moremillworkman
