Design Dilemma Porches & Decks Landscape Design

Design help for Extending patio l& partially covering

We want to add a large patio and cover/roof a portion. Thinking roughly 28’ Long x 15’ Deep.Plan to install a pool next season. Backyard is pretty much a blank slate. Installing privacy shrubs and trees along fence line this year. Removing the construction grade 10 x 12 concrete slab. Removing existing patio Door & adjacent window to install French doors. Leaning toward a stamped & stained concrete patio with some shape. Maybe a half wall to hide HVAC Unit which it just outside small kitchen window.
Covering a portion of the patio is critical. We are dead sun and it’s miserable during the summer months. I don’t like the bulky pergola look. Gable shingled roof or a metal roof? 🤔
I welcome all ideas but we are not trying to break the bank. I don’t need a finished ceiling look. Open w/ ceiling fans & lighting.
What would you do with with this space?
Can’t wait to see some creative ideas! ☺️

If you're planning to install a pool, I would have a whole landscape plan that covers the pool and hardscape areas as well as plantings. You don't want to put in landscape and hardscape and then find it has to be torn up to get the pool in. Plan first, pool second, other items third.

Thank you so much! We did think that through. Any plantings this spring will not impact the pool install. We will focus on the fence perimeter and will utilize some of the backfill (from the pool install next year) for larger tree plantings. Great thinking ahead! Thanks so much! ☺️

1. where do you live? as in, will your pool be closed (with a cover) some fraction of the year? a closed pool isnt a pleasant view, so you should site the pool appropriately. 2. which way is west? it matters a lot for where the shade will be disappearing and where it will be growing. 3. don't build anything else til you have the pool in. you dont know what supports will end up in the way of pool construction as you dont really know where the pool will end up. a pool has to be gated/gateable from your house, whether your daughter is a fish or not. she will always have friends and you will have guests with children that need to be kept from the water unless someone is paying 100% attention. codes are variable but strict. know the codes before you make any plans.

Privacy on your Patio is important. You also want peaceful and quiet. So my first observation is the AC compressor. Try placing some shrubbery adjacent to disguise it visually and soften sound when it runs I like bluestone, actually all natural surfaces. Leveling stone is more difficult both installing and furnature set upon them. Accordongly, I went with pavers. Your designer will help incorporate your wants within available space Things I consider include: Shade and sun Intimate and group dining Conversation Grilling Utilities Water feature Storage Possible fire pit Landscaping - we softened our planting beds but have a geometric patio Where a bistro table now rests was once a hot tub. Begin with a rear facing gable porch roof on the left -- same roof line as the house roof -- and then transition to a shed roof -- one with very little slope -- as your gable end transitions to the different roof line. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/107171666112536981/ If you're not wanted it to be "too dark" beneath your porch roof but fear it might be, add some skylights in the shed roof on the right side or you could even use greenhouse roofing panels for your porch / patio roof. Looks like you have a large lot to work with. Anything DIY will reduce cost but extend completion. We softened the patio look with gardens.

Absolutely agree with previous poster recommendation for a professional design. For example, where are utilities and will they need to move for a pool? Equipment access and might excavation disturb planting beds, drainage or compact the soil.

As to patio/shelter, stake out your space and stretch string to “live” the space before you build anything. Again, consider utilities snd lifestyle needs. IF you want a roofed shelter you must consider wind and depending on your location , snow load.
