Perennials Shrubs Hydrangeas

Morning shade and afternoon sun, central TX zone 8b?

Hello,

My wife and I would love to plant some annabelle hydrangeas in the front of our home but there is one large issue. Full shade in the morning until about mid afternoon. Then full sun with minimally scattered shade from the oaks. If we’re are diligent with the water will they be okay? Thanks in advance.

I am afraid "maybe not". :o(

For me in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area, water was not the problem. The leaves just do not tolerate our strong summer sun well. I find that Annabelle-like hydrangeas are particularly heat sensitive during our summer months. They also have foliage that did not stay healthy during afternoon/evening sun conditions of our hot summer months.

Since my summer sunlight lasts until close to 8-8:30pm at worst, the plants in your location will probably be getting a lot of direct sun, from around 3pm through 8pm or, about 4/5 hours of 100F degree temperatures for many weeks.

Paniculata hydrangeas are more sun tolerant and can usually stand more sun. In the New England states, they can be in full sun. But their leaves and blooms in my area suffered a lot too as our summer sun is so intense. So, I transplanted the paniculatas to get morning sun only or even full but bright shade.

If you still want to try anyway, may I suggest growing them in a pot at first so you can move the plant easily from one location to another.

Brandy, it takes a really long time for the yellowing foliage to turn brown and die down (several months), which it must do for them to return the following year. I have concentrated on growing the dwarf varieties and the foliage is hidden behind my liriope border. The rush like varieties also are less noticable as the foliage is a lot thinner. I do not put them first in the garden. A very good idea would be to plant them behind daylily clumps or in between small shrubs. Another option is for you to plant them in clumps and dig the clumps up when they finish blooming and plant them in an out of the way spot and replace them with annuals in late spring. I also grow them in large pots with pansies (20 to 30 bulbs) (fill the bottom of the pot with empty coke cans and put six inches of potting soil near the top. The pots can be put out of sight when they start to yellow. This year I am going to plant some in my husband's vegetable bed.

who is in OR?? poster in british columbia canada??? esh in GA ... the inclination of the sun ... the intensity of the light in GA.. may as well put esh on mars .. lol ... once you get the sun thing in mind.. then you can start thinking regionally .... and those peeps south of the mason-dixon line .... KY/TN state line ... may as well be considered tropical .. compared to us in the the great white north... so you MIGHT get away .. with a bit more afternoon sun .. than they can .... then you throw in ... that the the wind currents of BC caused by the pacific ... you are actually a VERY BIZARRE zone 8 ... zone being MINIMUM winter temp ONLY ... you stay warmer because of the ocean effect .... more than would be indicated for how north you are ... because you are technically north of my great white north MI.. but warmer in winter.. go figure on all that ... so even though you are north of me.. you have warmer winters than me... whats that all about.. lol .. i have 1500 hosta ... the light went on for me.. after getting a beautiful hosta book by a british author ... and she listed nearly every hosta as full sun .... and after changing my whole database ... i realized that her full sun .. was not my full sun ... and it had everything to do with latitude ... the ladder to the northpole .. i am just below 45 degrees north.. or half way to the pole ... GBrit is near 60 degrees north ... and their version of full sun.. is much weaker than i am ... so they can grow.. what i call a shade plant.. in full sun ... I agree with knoxrose. Pink rose, in your zone 9b, a dark purple rose would do less fading that in all day sun. I have three ETs and a TZ--have had them since they first came on the market, and all along I've noticed that TZ fades less than ET. They each have a slightly different type purple, but ET always fades to magenta or even lighter in all day sun. You can consider this area full sun. Pretty much any full sun plant would work.
