I am looking to do this as well, but with a new construction home. I have contacted several companies and am waiting to hear the solutions given. I have several Ecosmart LED bulbs from Home Depot ($25 each) that work great, but with the built in trim ring, they wont work on the recessed angled housings. I am thinking of installing regular housings and using the Ecosmart units, but am waiting to hear if that is OK to do (not sure if the bulbs can or should be used on an installed angle). Conversely, I found these replacement bulbs ( http://www.lightingever.com/9w-par20-led-bulb-track-lighting.html ) and I thought that they may work well in the specified angled housings. Again, waiting to hear back from them. To solve YOUR issue, if you can swap out the housings (I know you said there is no access) with the "retrofit" units you may be fine. If not, then I suggest using the bulbs from the link I posted, since they seem to be designed to fit inside of a traditional housing with trim, they SHOULD fit into an angled housing (I am trying to verify this).

Greenhaven, yes I should really hold myself back from insanity when discussing lighting with my husband! Those are pretty track lights that you posted. Robotropolis - I thought track lighting is rigid track, while monorail is flexible curvy track? But yes, same concept. Thank you very much for the Canadian lighting online store - I will totally check that. So tricky finding Canadian sources sometimes. I do like the idea of wall-mounted articulated sconces as an alternative to ceiling-mounted lighting, at least on the long part of the perimeter "L". I may have some open shelving on the wall on either side of the range - TBD. Dh knows there are recessed lights designed to come in contact with insulation - but the boxes that go into the ceiling are apparently *huge*. So each one would require cutting a big hole and then a lot drywall repairing. We will hire out the drywall repairs, but don't want to incur unnecessary expense there. I'll definitely try out an LED E26 that you've recommended. EAM44, there *were* upper cabinets on either side of the window before. I agree the window size/proportions really leave a lot to be desired. I *adore* your inspiration photo. Unfortunately, this is an exterior load-bearing wall, with a walkway outside (fire regulations), in a condo building, with a moisture envelope. I've learned the hard way that standard solutions for openings in load bearing walls don't work in this building because replacement vertical studs can't be tied into joists in a structurally/seismically acceptable way due to difficulty accessing the locations where those tie-ins would have to happen. I'm going to add curtains and hope that that visually widens the window a bit. Here's a very crude mockup (no counters, fronts, curtain rod, etc.): Edb2n, I think a small lamp or two on the counter might end up being a good solution for me. Dh will complain about it most likely, but I hope he can compromise a bit there.

Lynn, I suggest you try both the Cree LR6 and the Cree CR6. We tried both in our house and pulled out the LR6s and replaced them with the CR6 lights. The CR6 lights are actually less expensive than the LR6 lights but they dim much lower than the LR6 lights. The specs don't show a big difference in dimming but I can tell you the difference is very substantial. Also, the LR6 lights are more sensitive to the type of dimmers used, and we tried a number of different dimmers from the list recommended by Cree before finding ones that were satisfactory. The Home Depot Cree lights are rebadged CR6s, but they may have changed some of the components because the lifetime is 30,000 hours (I think) instead of the 50,000 hours with CR6 lights from Cree. Our house is 20 years old and had 6" pots throughout the kitchen, adjoining family room and hallway and I hated the look of the PAR bulbs and they needed changing constantly . Too expensive to change them all so we used a Hubbell retro kit that just clipped in and replaced the old bulbs with a complete trim and light kit when they first became available in LED with 4000k and made them more flush with the ceiling. After 10 years we just updated the LED's with a more subdued trim kit as we renovate the room with another quick fit kit but this time the kit is controllable via blue tooth and the colour temperature on each light (or groups) can be changed so I can vary from 5000K to 2500K if I want a more relaxed scene before bedtime. We have an iPad that stays in the room and controls our fireplace, Sonos, Ring and now our lighting. Lights can be turned off and on and dimmed using the wall switch or the app if I want to change the colour of the light and I can do it all from the couch (especially great for napping when I'm too lazy to get up and turn the lights off on the wall switch). They were cheap ($35) and may not last 10 years but I love the flexibility and I love grouping my lights to change a whole room at once. It's not the fanciest trim but I find it blends as well as the new pots we put in the bedroom. These ones were by Commercial Electric from Home Depot - a budget retrofit for those that don't want to rip out the old 6" or 4" cans and so easy to do yourself. We have a mix of 4" and 6" in our house. I like the 4" in the bedroom and master bath. I like the wider beam spread we get from the 6" in the kitchen. I love that these kits don't leave us stuck with one colour temperature that comes with an integrated bulb. Lots of options out there so you can change your look pretty easily.
