Is spring really on its way this year??
Comments (74)Nice photos! We've been cold and have had lots of snow/sleet events here, but never more than about 2"(5cm) in any one event and even though it's been so cold most of the snow/sleet manages to melt off just before the next round hits, so no big build up. The ground is currently like the tundra, with a thin mushy mess of mud and water on top of frozen ground and no acorns germinating outside. treeguy123, that's a good idea. I've kind of done that for some time, but I always end up getting too busy with other things that my list only gets about 1/2 to 2/3 done. Interesting to see henbit is in full bloom, but here henbit will bloom virtually any time during the winter we have a stretch of sunny days warmer than the mid to upper 20's with peak bloom happening in early March. Although this year, I won't be surprised if it's not until May sometime! Another brutal 20°F(11.1°C) below normal day today, but some possible signs of having some normal temperatures in the coming week(temps in the 50'sF(10-15C)) or even warmer! It's just not right when we were colder than the freakin North slope of Alaska 2 days last week! I mean come on! That's 2500 miles(4023km) North of here and 4125 miles(6639km) away in the Arctic Circle! If I went that far South of here, I'd by in the middle of the Amazon, why don't we get Amazonian weather blowing up here in February? Comments (4)If the vendor says "own root", that is not grafted ("budded" is the correct term). The bare root vendors typically will say "grafted" or "own root". Most bare root vendors sell grafted on Dr. Huey, except the Canadians, who sell mostly grafted on R. multiflora, with a smattering of Manetti. It is obvious when buying potted at the nursery: the grafted roses will have a large knot at the graft point, and the place where the Dr. Huey was cut off is usually visible. Most roses sold at local nurseries (including the big boxes) are grafted on Dr. Huey, save the Knock Outs (typically own root), and here the rugosas are sold own root. See the photo comparing budded (grafted) vs. own root bare roots in the article linked below. Also, if buying locally, ask, they should know. If they don't know, move to another nursery. Comments (4)Yes, I go there every year while musky fishing in Hayward. They have a magnificent display garden of a wide variety of plants. They also have many mature hostas, including the best Great Expectations I've ever seen. I posted a picture on the forum, and you could probably pull it up by searching for my name and Great Expectations. The hostas they sell, however, are nothing special. Mostly one-eyed and not a great variety. A little like Savory's in Edina in that respect. Great display garden, but not your best choice for buying something....See MoreHow has your week been?
Comments (5)Country bumpkin, I'm sorry for the pain you're going through now. Sending good thoughts to you. Monday DD and I both went to the doc after days of horrible coughing and cold stuff. DD had "just" a cold (a bad one) but I had a sinus infection and got drugged up for it. The prescription decongestant was $60 and written for 20 days supply! I told the pharmacist if I take it for 20 days I'm gonna need an intervention! She gave me 5 days for $15. We also dropped of my van Monday b/c the air would not blow, hot or cold, no fan. I like this mechanic, came from a good reference. But the problem was not what he first thought and it took 4 days to get it solved, and $650. Required taking the whole dash apart. Wednesday evening he called to say to pick it up Thursday, he was on reconnecting "wire 50 of 120." Good grief! I know I could never do that job! Wednesday evening the air in the house quit! Part needs replaced, $900 job can't be done til Tuesday next week. Fortunately, it's just one unit, so only the upstairs is hot. Today a relative called to ask to "borrow" money. I laughed. Best they'll get from me is a listening ear and any advice I can offer. This is the second relative in 2 months, evidently I have some relatives who have a false idea of my fincancial situation! Hopefully when I keep saying no they'll stop calling me. At least for money. ;o)...See Morewayne
