Update to my front yard design dilemma
Comments (14)Hi all-- Thanks for your comments. I have already screened the trees for color--the groundcover beds are cool/glaucous foliage with white/pink/red/purple/blue/burgundy flowers, so I think all of the trees would work. Spazzycat: THANK YOU for your tidbit about redbud seed germination! That's exactly the kind of info I need. I'm already dealing with some nasty re-seeders in the garden, so I appreciate this info. Based on your comments, plus those in the Trees forum, I think I am going to go with an Apple Serviceberry (amelanchier x grandiflora). Now I get to agonize over which tree to get at the nursery, etc., etc. As before, I'll update with photos. P.S. to laag: A special thank you for your practical encouragement. I agree, I just need to go out there and do something. As a small bit of justification, let me say that it's soooooo hard being a forward-thinking gardener in our staid neighborhood. When I took out those oakleaf hydrangeas, which were a bold choice among the clipped, ball-shaped yews that dominate our neighborhood, I could almost see my neighbors giving each other knowing smirks about about the crazy lady gardener who is pouring good money after bad into her so-so garden. (Gardening is such a VISIBLE hobby, darn it!) For this reason, I really want this foundation planting to (a) look great and (b) STICK. Even so, I very much appreciate your not-so-gentle nudges throughout!...See MoreFireplaces, corner or the TV over the fireplace?
Comments (12)To be honest, I'm only putting in the fireplace because it would look stupid without one, as EVERY new home in my area has one. (Most people try to convince me I need one in the office/den and master as well, which I am refusing to do). We will likely seldom use it, though maybe with a gas one I may switch it on some evenings for a bit. We live in California, though we are both transplants here, so we seldom find it cool enough to warrant needing it. Ideally I'd like the fireplace and TV on different walls altogether, but I can't do that without giving up windows, and that isn't an option! Currently our TV is over our fireplace and it doesn't bother me as our mantel is relatively low, and with those new landscape fireplaces it could be lower. For instance, in the second image the TV isn't too high, and I think the fireplace could even be dropped another few inches. I do think I solved my own issue as with the curtains it wouldn't be safe (or look good) to have a corner fireplace. So TV over the fireplace it is :) Also, now that I stare at all these photos some more I realize I like the clean look of not having a table beneath the TV, and if there wasn't a fireplace it looks silly to not have anything under the TV. So the decision is complete! Thanks for your advice, and helping me talk myself into a decision! :)...See MoreCorner Fireplace design dilemma - help please
Comments (8)Thank you nhbaskets. I like your fireplace. The dilemma I've run into is that the fireplace isn't square to the corner, so my taking the tile up to the ceiling probably isn't going to work. I might try something like in the picture below. This layout looks so much like our house. I'm thinking Framing the upper part in - then maybe putting stacked stone on the upper and lower fireplace sections with the mantle in between. I can't come out too far on the upper left because there is a window frame in the way....See MoreCorner Fireplace dilemma
Comments (5)Pretty space! Love the color. That's an electric fireplace, right? I have one in my library and enjoy it. Is that the only corner in the room where you can use it? I ask because it seems a little too close to the doorways. If it must stay there, I'd accent the top with a simple piece of pottery that's large enough to make a statement and leave it at that....See Moresocalusa
