Dave: Thanks for the pollination link. There is also information there on pollination of blueberry, see below. I need to study that more. I think there is info on other fruits as well. Very nice site. bamboo: The Emerald is growing like a weed. I'm sure it got enough chilling. It got the same as Sweetcrisp which is setting just fine. Lack of chilling didn't inhibit fruit set on Jewel. It got almost no chilling and is just now pushing a few new shoots. It's got so much fruit it's getting top heavy, at least 5 lbs fruit on 3 gallons potting media. My Sweetcrisp have adequate fruit buds, more than expected. It may only be half some others but that's still plenty for me. I'd be expecting at least a cup, maybe two off the very small 7 month old plant and 4-5 lbs off a large second year plant. There is probably more fruit than that. When I've actually weighed fruit I've been amazed at the total. Last year 18 lbs off a potted Star. That's from about 12 gal potting media. I've been researching some more, and Seckel would supposedly pollinate most mid to late Asian varieties, but I'm concerned that L.E. Cooke only lists them as a "5" in fireblight tolerance, out of "10"! I would hesitate to plant anything with less than an "8" when so many quality varieties are available that meet that mark. I'm really interested in Shinko Asian Pears because of their fireblight resistance. I'm looking at hybrid pears for the same reason. One thing that's really hard to find is bloom information for low-chill hybrid pears in the south. Does anyone know if, for instance, a Fan-Still, Fan-Crisp, Monterrey, Ayers, Pineapple, Moonglow or Orient will bloom at an appropriate time to pollinate a Shinko Asian Pear? (these are just varieties I recall seeing at the local garden center. I know there are others recommended for the area that have high resistance) I wish someone with that knowledge, particularly in Texas where hybrid and Asian Pears are highly-recommended, would put together a bloom chart with cross-pollination information!

Most likely you bought cross pollinated seeds. If your plants croos this year, you will not be able to tell until you plant the seeds you save from them next year. This is why it is ok to plant sweet bell peppers next to Habs without worry. That is, as long as you dont plan on saving seed. Hope this helps!

BER can develop at any point on a fruit. The blossom end is most common but your photo is definitely BER. Dave PS: I 'think' that tagged as a FAQ means that there is a rather lengthy FAQ here (somewhere) about this question. And it is also a very common question posted. Problem is we can't seem to find the FAQs since the reorganization and even using the recalled titles of many of them don't pull them up with the Search as it used to. The search does pull up 50+ previous discussions about this but no FAQ.
