April 2020 Hosta garden
Comments (63)Djacobz, here is Tattoo today. I bought from Tony Avent's Plant Delights Nursery on an open house day in early spring 2018. Tattoo has a bad reputation, which it probably deserves. I have read of it being hard to grow, especially for good gardeners. After reading of the experiences of others, I noticed a common thread. The better and more attentive the gardener, the worse the outcome. My plant got sick with sclerotia just over 1 week after purchase. I doused it with antifungals and watched the plant 90% die. I decided that I had to do the opposite of what I should do normally. So, instead of putting it in great soil, I dug up the native soil in my yard, a sickly red clay. I mixed clay and dead oak leaves and potted Tattoo in that. And then I try to ignore it, except for pictures. So far, it is not dead and has added one eye....See MoreMy Hosta Garden in June 2020

Comments (61)I just made an executive decision and I’m declaring my “Prairie Sky” long-gone, and adding Blue Maui to my spreadsheet of hostas. Several years ago I thought my Rainforest Sunrise sport had died and that it was Prairie Sky that lived on in a pot and eventually was divided into 3 plants and put into the ground. However today I looked closely at Beth’s Earth Angel picture, with what appears to be a Rainforest Sunrise in the foreground, and those flowers are just like my RS sport. I don’t know why I haven’t realized it before, because I have RS too... and the blooms are distinctive. And I’ve always wondered why Prairie Sky wasn’t as blue as she started out. Sheesh! I shouldn’t admit to being this dense... but anyway... here’s what I’m calling Blue Maui. And they look SO much like the Library photos, especially in person. It’s not the most beautiful plant, but kinda cute- in the way possums are cute- the face only a mother could love....See MoreHosta Flowers 2020
Comments (43)Debra and NHL - so glad to enable you on Tickle Me Pink! I just think it's a real standout. Can't wait to see it again soon. All of these flowers are just beautiful. I can't believe I used to think hosta flowers were ugly. I guess I'm still not crazy about the super long scapes that veer off to the sides and look a little unkempt (like on Winter Snow)... but even those are okay for a little while until they turn brown (then I cut 'em off). I really like the straight up scapes - Old Dirt, that Sweet Home Chicago is beautiful! I can't believe I don't have one, since I'm originally from Chicago. Peren, you do have amazing flowers, and Teaspoon is especially noticable to me. I have two Teaspoons and they are growing soooo slowly, and have never bloomed. Not sure what's wrong with them... maybe slow to establish. And I love your critter pictures. Sunnywood, whatever it's called, it's gorgeous! Lederhosen - I looked it up in the Library and they say it's rare/difficult to find. I'll be keeping my eyes open for that one. And fragrant too! This summer I'll try to keep all these categories in mind as I work in the garden, and hopefully get some better pictures....See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
