Garbage disposal shoots water out the other sink drain.

When I turn my garbage disposal on, it shoots water and debris out the other drain first for about 1 second before it drains. I had 2 plumbers look at it, and one replaced the disposal saying it was too old. That fixed the problem for a few days, but it came back. The other one told me that there is no vent going to it, because it's in the island, and for whatever reason, they can't vent it up, so there is no vent, therefore the vacuum shoots the water up. Both checked the draining, and there are no obstructions in the water flow. Does this sound reasonable?

I don't, at least I can't see it. Can it be in the wall?

Thanks for your photos and replies. Yes, we want the soap dispenser also. That's why we want ONE faucet for the instant hot and filtered water. That would be at least three "things" in total on the counter behind the prep sink: one faucet for instant hot and filtered water, one regular faucet, and one soap dispenser. Maybe four...disposal air switch as well? I was thinking of an undermount prep sink that is about 15" by 15" inside. I think it will work on the counter; I'm more concerned about underneath. I figure the rest of the cleaning supplies will be under the main clean-up sink and the dishwasher air gap will be there, too. Maybe I need to just buy all of the products ahead of time and see how it fits.

The cleaning issue on the mesh strainers may also come back around to the disposal issue...we don't have one, so running water over the strainer to rinse it doesn't work in our case (though I've been known to do it in a pinch if it's sauce or something that really isn't shake-off-able). I can definitely see that any strainer cleaning would be much easier with a disposal (but then you probably wouldn't need a strainer as much?) Don't know about the Duostrainer fitting other sinks, though it's promising that it worked with buehl's. Our setup is all Kohler, mostly b/c I read some reports of people having issues using other drains on the Kohler cast iron sinks, and figured if I was getting the Kohler drain I should just get the whole shebang...got grief from my husband about this for the cost (I had no idea what that stuff was supposed to cost, and it wasn't crazy expensive---maybe $100 for the drain/strainer/p-trap/cutting board, on top of $300 for the sink?---but I gather you can get drains and pipes at the hardware store for far less). Our plumber laughed at me and said basically no one buys the Kohler parts other than the sink, but he was then quite impressed by the quality of the parts when he got them out to install (apparently we have the nicest P-trap around, who knew), so I didn't feel too badly about it! As a system the drain + strainer works beautifully but don't know how it would work with other sinks.

Thanks, everyone. I definitely should have known better than to put that food in the garbage disposal. I learned an expensive lesson. Although I didn't put all those food items in at one time, it was still a mistake to put them in there. The disposal is over 14 years old. As for the dishwasher, it was leaking while in use a year prior to the recent sink clog, so the clog has nothing to do with the leak in the dishwasher. The dishwasher doesn't leak while not in use. I'd be happy to wash the dishes by hand if it wasn't for the pain/injury in my foot. Things are old in this house, and they're breaking down. The kitchen faucet has had issues and has been leaking since 2007 (it's old), yet the landlord refused to have it fixed when a plumber was here for a kitchen pipe. I had even obtained a replacement faucet & replacement parts to help out, but he still refused to agree to make repairs. When I moved in, I was told that the kitchen would be remodeled, so everything would be fixed; that never happened. I can't wait to move out. If I was a regular tenant--not related to this family member--I'm sure things would have been fixed.

Sorry, for the late reply. I just saw this. No, we've had so many other issues come up with the build that have required all my attention, I haven't had time to focus on this. I do plan to use 30"-36" sinks. I will let the final cabinet layout dictate the sink sizes, so long as we are in that range. If I have an extra 3" of wasted space, I'll go up in sink size, or if I need a few inches for the trash can, I'll go down a couple inches on the sink. The main thing I haven't decided on yet, is whether they'll both be apron sinks or one apron and one under mount. Or, one stainless steel and one fire clay/ceramic/etc? Oh boy, I guess I have a little more left to decide than I thought! I think lead time and prices will point in the right direction on material! LOL! @vevmom, if your island is 10' long, I think the 33" sink will work nicely. That is still less than 1/3 of your island. I think bbtrix's photos above are great for helping to visualize this. (Thanks again bbtrix!) That island is 8' long with a stages 45. You'll have 2 more feet of island, plus a smaller sink. Let me know what you decide.

AAV's are not universally allowed by code, and when they are they must be readily accessible. Have you looked inside the island cabinetry? Sometimes AAV's fail, which is why they must be able to be inspected and serviced. Are you saying you have a sink in the island without a conventional vent or an AAV?

I think that's what's happening. As far as I can tell, there is nothing there.

I've had the same problem and I think its more likely the result of the fast moving disposal discharge both hitting the side wall of the fitting as well as having to overcome the stationary water in the trap. For a moment, the discharge splatters both up and down as its flow is trying to overcome the stationary mass of trap water. In a second or so, things settle down and everything continues down the drain. I believe a directional tee fitting that directs the disposal discharge downward at the tee would solve the majority of your issue.

Personally, I've never found this type of fitting in the DWV sizes, but I have seen them in the cheaper polypro type of drain fittings.

Mine does this sometimes. I chalked it up to not turning it on after it got stuff in it so it was a bit fuller than it should be when it started. I didn't think it was a "problem" and just got accustomed to putting something over the drain on the other side when I turned it on. Are you saying there's something wrong that needs to be fixed?

I am not sure if it's fixable, I just wish it could be. sometimes when I forget to "pulse" it slowly, it spits in my face.
