Can you show a photo of the house before and the plans? This probably isn’t helpful and I apologize, but can the carport be turned into a garage? That large addition might end up looking like it’s balancing on sticks without some real solid walls beneath it (even with 1 wall being all garage door).

IMO only as I am not a builder of any kind......... The bags of money solution would be to make the existing pop up much larger to help with the flow. Or, you could attempt to just trick the eye into balance by adding, for example, a couple of gorgeous copper weathervanes to either side of the existing pop up, high up the roof line . This would help balance it out. And matching windows in each of the pop ups would also help unify the area. What are those pop ups called anyway?

I need to see the plans because this is total miss IMO . A good architect would have put the brakes on long before construction even started . So more info and the original design .IMO you need to add on to the back to svae this once nice part.While you are at it reove those shutters .

I'll just try to answer your question since it's already built and you are going to have to live with it. It's unclear whether the back portion is already there or started, but it would be a good idea to shift the budget to a real garage as Donald suggests upthread. (Whoever designed this didn't know what they were doing, and you should not proceed with another addition if it isn't started yet.) A carport is going to give you a "house on stilts" look. You also need to set aside money for a landscape designer to create a front garden on the right with a great walkway and perennial plants to balance out the left.

Paint the entire house a dark color with a very bright front door. Dark colors recede and that's what you want. Choose a paint color for the house that coordinates well with your roof color--many people do not do this.

The other possibilty, much riskier since you're trying to fix a mistake, is to do a color block, but in reverse of this. Choose a bright Craftsman paint for the main house and a coordinating dark color for the addition. Seriously think about getting a color consultant in any case to choose your colors.

Is the carport height designed to accommodate a camper or boat? Seems high to me.

The craftsman bungalow style is forever lost. The only way I can think of to detract attention from the mass which doesn't even follow the same design detailing - is to enlarge the existing dormer (a bit wider and taller to be a full 1.5 storied floor). This is what happens when you go to a contractor and ask "can I enlarge the 2nd floor? Sure, I can do it for you." Your ROI just took a huge hit.

Housegal200's color ideas will work. If you can't do a complete house repaint yet, change the shutters' black paint to cranberry red to draw attention away from the new addition. The new addition can be the same color as the main house or a slightly darker version of the same color.

I would consider extending the roof across as I've shown here, adding a matching column.

The windows would need to be raised. Part of the problem is how much wall is above the windows. This style of house typically has a lower roof line, and the addition seems tall and skinny with a roof sitting on top.

There are several problems with the design. I cannot imagine someone building this addition on this house, and I wonder why these things were never questioned.

The addition should have been modeled on the small dormer so it matched the house. Things like the trim, eave details circled in red, and the slope of the roof shown in green should match.

@ PPF Thanks for pointing out how this plan was off from the get-go. Probably a contractor, not an architect, drew up the plans. Half the problems inside and out on Design Dilemmas seem to be from posters having to deal withweird stuff contractors put in without an architect's input.

Thank you all for your input. This is the plan we approved from the architect. In retrospect there were more questions to ask etc., but we have to move forward with what we have.

It looks like the roof pitch on the addition was supposed to match the dormer, but the construction shown doesn't seem to.

The trouble here is that when you look at the elevation above, you are seeing it straight on. You would have to be 12ft tall to see it that way. Now that it is built , you are seeing the upward angle of the build.

I think when it is finished, it will be ok. Still a bit out of proportion, but nice .

Apologies for thinking a contractor designed this, not an architect. It seems out of proportion to the bungalow side, but hopefully with paint and landscaping you'll be okay with it.

As pointed out that pitch on the roof is just wrong!!!! Should match the dormer's pitch. That is a big mistake.

PPF's version with the extended roof and tapered columns is a great way to minimize the visual mass of the addition. Well done! The roof pitch should match the existing dormer roof pitch as per the plans unless there was a problem doing so--in which case your remodeler should have advised you.

The OP says the designer was an architect. I'm reminded that 50% of architects graduated in the bottom half of their class (Mark Bischak, you can check the math, but keep your socks on.)
