Hi there! First off, your jatoba flooring is beautiful and likely adds quite a feeling of elegance to the home. There are a couple of questions I have about the home though, like are there any bathrooms on the 2nd floor? Do you have any children, or pets in the house? Luxury vinyl and laminate are both durable either way and provide the look of natural wood, but in general, although a little more expensive, I believe luxury vinyl would be the better option. Luxury vinyl has the ability to resist moisture, whereas with laminate flooring the joints can swell and pucker if exposed to moisture (which is why I was wondering about the bathrooms.) Also if you are installing flooring over your heated tiles, be sure that the floor is leveled. The luxury vinyl flooring works well on any tightly sealed, smooth or seamless surface. They can be installed over ceramic tile if there are no cracks/broken pieces, and if the grout lines for the tile are not deep or wide. So, do make sure to check if the ceramic tile design you have allows you to properly install over it, or if it will need to be removed before installing the new flooring. In regards to design, it's a little hard to see the colour of your stairs clearly in that picture, but if it's a touch darker then I think you have the right train of thought. Try your best to go with something similar to the jatoba, because even if the stairs are a bit darker, it adds some contrast with the main floor. So I think it's best to continue that aesthetic for the whole house, than trying to blend one floor with the stairs and contrast with the other, since you are replicating the appearance of the same type of material i.e. wood. You must wait for a photo to clarify before you hit the submit button. That said? You are over thinking . Pick a nice oak in a slightly wider plank. A medium dark toasty color. Not gray, not orange. You can be sure it will "go" with everything. A lot of flooring will "go" with everything. Rooms do not remain empty. Rugs get laid down, Furniture is placed Art is hung, Windows get shades or curtains. The only time you will see JUST the floor is the day you move out. Rather than the approach you have taken? Look at entire rooms that please you. THEN look at the flooring. Are they modern, traditional, or a little in between? Light , or deeper and cozy? A floor should last "forever". This isn't the paint on the walls....."Oh, I think I'll paint the bedroom blue this weekend" Sand on site hardwoods, oak especially, have lived in homes for a hundred years and more .........and there might be a reason for that : )

Since I'll be helping, cost for the vinyl or laminate isn't an issue. I anticipate buying a high end product. My daughter & her husband just want durable flooring to take the abuse of their young kids & the pets, and that ideally might help with resale (IMO - anything will be an improvement over the current rugs & kitchen linoleum). They don't want hardwood or tile, although I did try to talk them into considering the wood-look tile. They want a product that is going to be extremely easy to care for, since they're hospital nurses in addition to having the two small kids. They also want the same flooring to flow through the entire 1st floor instead of installing a separate flooring in the small U-shaped kitchen. One salesman has been pushing for the vinyl plank, and another one is recommending laminate. They had the measurements done this week, so decision time is coming!

No matter what you choose, just be aware that when you add a layer of flooring on top of existing flooring in your kitchen it is possible to trap your dishwasher and refrigerator such that you won't be able to pull it out to service or replace it. It's more likely to happen with the dishwasher since it is trapped by the counter. Sometimes refrigerators have some wiggle room at the top. This has happened to me and one of my friends. The people laying the floor don't care because it's not their problem and their livelyhood depends on them not telling people about it. You will get more comments on your question if you post pictures of the colors that are available for you to choose from. It's even better if you have brought samples home and can show them against your cabinets. If you're doing your whole first floor with it you need to also be thinking about how it's going to look with your furniture in the affected rooms. The one thing I will say is that gray floors are a dead trend on the coasts already. If they're still popular where you are you can expect it to be a trend that won't last much longer.
