The brick mould is not supposed to be touching any part of the house?

Also no backer rod just all caulking.

What brickmould, none showing in this picture? There is none shown? The opening typically in residential will either be stuffed with fiberglass or spray foamed (minimal hopefully).

Can you take a better picture of the inside of this door. Show more of the walls on both sides. Also please take one from the exterior

There was quite a bit of spray foam put in the gap. The other side of the door has the brick mould, well what I think is the brick mould (pvc trim on outside of door). I just wasn’t sure if this was normal. Here is a picture of the exterior: The red circle is the caulked joint.

I didn’t get to take many photos as the finished up before I could. But this is what I have.

I guess what I am asking is the brick mould supposed to extend over the house sheeting like in this photo:

Typically yes the brickmould would lap the sheathing but your rough opening appears to be to large. The caulk and spray foam are sloppy for the same reason.

That is what I thought as well. What would be the correct way to fix this issue?

That is a sidelight, not a door.

It looks like substantially more money needed to be spent to integrate the exterior trim w/ the door & sidelights....looks like the fluted exterior trim was existing prior to the new door & sidelights being installed. ????

A full picture would be very helpful, of both inside and outside.

The large fluted trim was already there prior to the new door being installed. Here are some more photos.

Also looked up my paperwork for the door. It calls for a rough opening of 53 3/8. The overall tip to tip frame size of the door including brick mould is 54 1/4. My rough opening is 54.

Something is off then somewhere.

Think the door is too small? All my other doors do not have this much gap between the rough opening and the door. Also I feel like this 1/2 inch bead of caulking is not going to hold up. This is the second time they put this door in as it leaked the last time.

The RO could have been reduced by adding some strips of planed stock or 1/4" plywood.

What may have happened is that the old door assembly had beefier jambs and/or wider brick mould--if there was brick mould there originally?

This happened to us. The original brick mould on this house was wider than modern brick mould. We weren't able to source the wider stuff locally--don't know if it is even available anywhere outside of having custom millwork done.

What we did was eliminate the brick mould and trimmed with flat stock, 3/4" thick. Then built up by adding moulding on top of the flat stock.

Every install manual I saw for a door was to caulk the back side of the brick mould and lay into the rough opening so the caulk squishes against the house wrap/flashing. They did not flash this rough opening, they filled the gap between the house and the brick mould with caulking. They did this the first time they installed the door and it leaked into my basement. I just don’t want it to leak again.

Thank you, that looks way better then what they did for my install and probably doesn’t leak either.

I was super happy with how it turned out. No leaks but the second floor is cantilevered over the opening so it is semi-protected. But it does get hosed down several times during the summer. Also used flashing tape underneath.
