Guillot roses
Comments (7)We can always try! I've been pestering poor Rene at Palatine for maybe 4 years to grow more Poulsen roses (to replace my dearly departed Bella Renaissance among others), as well as to return some of the Delbard roses to production like Augusta Luise. As I understand it, there is a two-pronged approach to introducing new lines of roses into a vendor's offerings. The first one Palatine did, by getting a license with Delbard to sell their offerings with appropriate licensing and royalties paid and mother plants acquired. After they did so, they then needed to start production of specific varieties within the offerings of that breeder, and that takes additional steps of permissions as I understand it. The frustrating thing from the vendor's point of view is that Rene did all this fine for Delbard roses but he was then told after acquiring the mother plants that he wasn't a big enough vendor for the roses and wasn't allowed to sell them after all, even though he had the mother plants. I may be editing the story a bit, but that's the gist as I understand it. Frustrating both for him and for all of us drooling over the Delbard offerings. That's why you're right that a gentle approach is the best since the vendors have to make the tough call of which roses sell best for them, not just what us rose fanatics want to buy. So the most logical place to advocate for more Guillot roses would be with someone who already has a working relationship with Massad/Guillot, since the first step is done. As far as I know, I've only ever seen Massad/Guillot roses from Roses Unlimited, so if someone else has licenses for them they aren't on their lists yet. That's why I'm planning to pick my ultra-favorites from this exquisite list and do a little nudging of 3 or 4 of them, with the commitment that I'll be willing to buy any new Guillot roses that Pat can produce - not hard since I have all the ones she already sells and I buy a lot of roses from RU each year anyway to justify a bulk order. My guess is that sometime in July or August is a good time to advocate for new rose offerings for the following year, and I've started sending my "dream list" of roses that I maintain to both Pat at RU and Burling at Burlington Roses. I figure it's low pressure to indicate roses that I'd love to see, and I counter with the commitment to buy any of those roses if they make it to sales. Having said that, I haven't seen any fruits of that labor but Burling DID finally produce viable plants of Stranger that Beth has been tempting us with for years, so someone's advocacy has paid off (and YES I bought mine the nanosecond I heard about it). Comments (3)Wow! You've got quite a list there! It shows that roses grow different for folks in different areas. I'm not sure how well I can respond to this question. My favorite rose is Gruss an Aachen. Has been, always will be. As for the second favorite? I have about 65 roses that are pushing for second place. If I go by the ones I cut the most often, in this order: Artistry Double Delight Patio Pearl Hot Cocoa Liberty Bell Sassy Cindy Chicago Peace Touch of Class...See MoreYour favorite Meilland rose
Comments (21)Thank you, arbutus, for the additional information. Sounds promising, though I'll have to research Dark Night more if I decide to put it in my Midwestern garden. I'm keeping it on my reserve list for now. About Peter Mayle: Maryl, in my garden, Peter Mayle is not a "space-eater." In fact, it has been a rather narrow, vertical/upright bush and I've wished it would be a bit fuller on the sides. Maybe its narrowness is due to where I planted it--on the west side of my neighbor's garage (along the property line) stuffed between two bigger and more aggressive roses that maybe force Peter to grow vertically in order to get high enough to get his share of sunshine? Don't know. Pat, Peter Mayle is a fairly good bloomer for a rose that produces the biggest, fattest blooms in the garden. Like Valencia, which produces the second biggest blooms in my garden, Peter is a bit slow on the rebloom. I think it is because it takes longer for big/fat blooming roses to make those big/fat blooms! On the other hand, nearly all my roses slow down considerably--even shut down-- when we get into hot, hot, hot August--Peter Mayle included. But when Peter (or Valencia) actually bloom, they sure can be show-stoppers, so I forgive them. LOL Kate...See MoreYour most favorite fragrant roses from Roses Unlimited?
Comments (126)Some bouquets of fragrant roses bought from Roses Unlimited. My all-time favorites from RU are: Sonia Rykiel (a dozen blooms per flush in 1st year as own-root), Versigny (the scent is worth buying), Poseidon (going to frost with 30+ buds), Summer Sun (compact & small for a Kordes rose), Savannah (non-stop blooming), Pink Peace (great for the vase), Sweet Mademoiselle and Firefighter (both last 5 days in the vase), Betty White, Twilight Zone, About Face, Liv Tyler, and many Austins that RU sold before 2021. Below upper pink is Sonia Rykiel, dark red is the Dark Lady (from RU): Below dark red is Munstead Wood, and and orange About Face, red is Firefighter. Below orange is America, light pinks are Gene Boerner (thornless), and blue is Poseidon. Big red is Peter Mayle (survives 5+ years in my zone 5a winter): Below yellows are Moonlight Romantica (smells just as good as Golden Cel). Upper light pinks are Princess Charlene de Monaco (now 10' x 3') needs space. Blue is Poseidon lasts 5 days. Below deep oranges are Sweet Mademoiselle, light left pink is Savannah, and reds are the Dark Lady (going into Nov. frost with many buds): Below bouquet is picked Oct. 29, 2023 before frost. Red is Veteran's Honor. Pink is Radio Times, white is Bolero, dark pink is Dee-lish, and dark red is the Dark Lady. All are from Roses Unlimited. Below large dark pink is Peter Mayle (eucalytus rose scent, so unique), light pinks are Evelyn, deep pink is Comte de Chambord, gaudy orange is Solitude (worth having for hot summer). Liv Tyler (right deep pink) never ball like Sweet Mademoiselle, Liv Tyler gives twice more blooms than Sweet M. Left dark pink is Pink Peace (worth buying with its buttercream frosting scent). Right light pink is Frederic Mistral (petals get spoiled often in rainy climate, worse than Betty White) Below was Liv Tyler in my garden at above 90 F, it's best for hot climate....See Moresharon2079
