what should I replace my kitchen floor with?

We have a 1950s ranch with original hardwood throughout, except in the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen has this sheet vinyl that is glued down to a plywood floor that’s floating on top of the subfloor, making it slightly higher than the adjoining hardwood. We were hoping hardwood lurked beneath, but it doesn’t appear to be the case. Should we replace the old vinyl with new vinyl? Should we expand the kitchen floor into the hardwood area a bit to even up the eating space? Should we install hardwood in the kitchen, knowing it won’t match the other hardwood? Help!
