How would hubs feel if you sold the couch? Is it the money he's worried about? Can the sectional be taken apart easily? Maybe taking it apart and using just certain parts of it may be an option. Regarding the rug, I like the selections on overstock.com. I don't have a problem with you mixing metals, since you have a pretty cohesive look going on here. Items on the console? You can leave it empty if there's a very small space between the tv and the console. You can go to your local art gallery for ideas. Also Michaels craft store and get some items. Measure the area between the console and the tv. I'd put anything like small sculptural items to low plants. I played with a few ideas (some suggested by others) to make the room feel more like home: Moving the rug away from the windows a little for "breathing space". Adding simple drapery panels on each side of the windows for softness and height (if landlord allows). Pulling the sofa and side tables forward enough to allow tall items behind the tables (so the floor lamp is close enough to the sofa to read by, and the other corner can have something tall for balance). Hanging art that reflects your interests (which might not be the architecture of Morocco as shown, but I liked the way the arches relate to the rug motifs). Adding chairs facing the windows and a bench under the windows for guest seating. Including some "creature comforts" that make you happy (books? plants? pillows?). Choose specific items to your taste, of course, but perhaps this offers some ideas. For budget, as others have said, some great finds come from thrift shops. If a tall plant is too pricey, you could substitute interesting bare branches picked up in the woods or tall feathery grasses gathered after they have dried in the fall.
