fast sprouting seeds, too fast???
Comments (5)ssfkat, I am doing seeds for the first time in my life (pretty much newbie to ALL gardening except for house plants), and my seeds are doing the same thing. Some of them started sprouting in just a couple of days, to my great surprise and delight. I'm in California's Central Valley, and we've had some very lovely sunshine-y days and nighttime temps in the upper 30s and low 40s. I have the tray in our sleeping porch - LOTS of light and sunshine, with windows all around, and I can open one window up during the day. It's been getting really warm out there in the middle of the day, although we're supposed to get a cold storm tonight or tomorrow. My seeds are all from Seeds of Change, an organic mail order company, except for one row: lobelia, which I found at Lowe's and planted just the day after the others. It hasn't come up yet, but there's still plenty of time. I planted them all in one of those trays with plugs in them (composted bark fiber "inoculated with beneficial microorganisms") that I ordered from the same place. I keep telling myself "So far, so good", because I've been reading about "damping-off", etc., and realize that there are still a lot of things that could go wrong. Also we had a terrible and prolonged cold snap earlier this year, very unusual, so I feel like anything could happen weather-wise. Nevertheless, I got SO EXCITED when I saw them coming up! I have to restrain myself from going out there every hour on the hour to look at them. Hurrah for Spring!!...See MoreHow Fast Do Wisteria's Grow In One Year?
Comments (12)The OP didn't give any ideas where he lives and that may make a difference.... I grow both W. sinensis and W. floribunda. I grow both as 'trees' and would not grow either in any other way! My Chinese one is the oldest (planted in its current location in 2001). The Japanese one was planted in 2007. At this point, the Chinese one only puts out one or two annoying root sucker each year, while the Japanese one is still producing 6-10 a year. In its younger years, the Chinese one also produced that many a year - so I conclude that the sucker production decreases with age and maintenance (whenever possible we tear off (rather than cut off) the root suckers in hopes of removing the budwood that gives rise to the suckers....) Both 'trees' produce lots of whippy/curly new growth every year - we prune all of it back every week or so which keeps the trees looking tidy and also promotes formation of flowering wood (and, for the Chinese one, promotes a second, less prolific flush of flowers). Grown as trees, I don't find much difference in the work required to maintain the two types - except that we let the Chinese one get to 8-10' while are keeping the Japanese one to 6' or so. We may decide at some point to prune the Chinese one into a smaller shape too.) I highly recommend that anyone considering growing a wisteria grow it as a tree - much, much easier to prune and control and it makes a very striking garden feature....See MoreIRS Question
Comments (10)Gammyt, I don't really understand what you are asking. Are you saying that he didn't file as he should have last April, and is trying to do it now, 8 months late, and is wondering how much more it will cost him? If he has an IRS tax booklet from last year, I think that there is a formula for calculating the interest and penalties. Also, if he goes to freefile.gov and connects with one of the tax preparation programs to fill out the return, they should calculate it too. The interest rate changes quarterly. They do charge interest on the unpaid fines/penalties as well. So that part can't be guessed by me. According to the IRS site, the penalty for not filing is 5% per month that the filing is overdue (5% of what he owed). After 2 months late, the minimun penalty is $100. (So, on $660, penalty right now of $264?) Then they also levy a penalty of 0.5% per month for paying late. But they will give you a break if you have to pay both penalties! I am not sure how that would work: but with out the break it is another $26 or so. There is also a penalty for diregarding IRS rules, and still another if they decide that he filled out the return fraudulently. Many years ago, my soon to be ex-spouse worked for one night at a market then quit. I didn't know about it, and when I filled out our return that year, of course I omitted that one night's pay. But the IRS knew about it and hit me (by this time he was long gone) with penalties and interest way more than the amount of tax owed for those few dollars. I wish him luck!...See MoreMedia Cabinet ? Comments (28)Just want to add that, in looking further, I did find the following remote (see link below). I haven't finnshed researching it yet, but it appears it will do what I want---and much more. It also costs much more than the other remote I was looking at. The concern that prompted my first post here was simply being able to control turning on the TV, changing channels, and increasing or decreasing the volume of the TV when the cable box is in the cabinet, behind closed doors. My understanding is that I need an RF remote to accomplish that. The remote referenced at the bottom of this thread apparently will do this. It's also approximately $180 more than the first remote I found. So DH and I will have to determine whether it's worth laying out the additional dollars to decrease the number of remotes we need to use. Probably going to have to table this decision until we get further along building our home and see how many and how expensive unexpected expenditures we have. I certainly don't expect you to make the decision for me, but can you confirm that the two Harmony remotes I have linked---one in this post and one in a post above---will enable me to communicate with at least some of my components within a cabinet with the RF remotes and the hub that comes with each of them?
