Help finding a table for a banquette
Comments (21)Our breakfast nook is in a bay window with built in seating. In order to make the seating most useful, it requires an oddly shaped top. DH banged together a temporary table out of plywood and scrap lumber from our build, which we've been using since. We have contacted a custom woodworker and will hopefully be dropping off our narra wood planks (a gift from a family friend many decades ago) with him next week so he can get started on a custom table. Note the trestle so people can easily skootch in and out of the seating. A table with legs on the corners wouldn't allow that to happen. I have no concerns about a wood top, especially with the finishes they have these days. However, I would talk to the corian guys...it is not a structural material and would need sufficient support underneath to keep it from bending/breaking. We wanted a corian bench seat in our shower and it required a steel frame to support the entire piece of corian to give it sufficient strength for the purpose. A stone top would probably need less support, but more strength in the base to support the weight. Also consider if you want to move the table for cleaning purposes...the stone would be very heavy and could damage, say, a wood floor from the weight......See MoreTo Banquette or not to banquette
Comments (7)You have lots of things to think about that only you can answer: How formal do you want to dine? A banquette is an informal eating space, compared to the more formal set up you have now. Does your home have a dining room, in addition to this space? If so, you could sacrifice this duplicate formal dining space, downgrading it to a more informal eating space. If not, you may want to reconsider, to keep the option for formal Thanksgiving Dinner, etc. Think about how you want to use and care for the eating space: How many people do you envision seating at a banquette table? The larger the number, the harder it is to get in and out of it on the bench side. The way it is now would be easiest to clean. Also, think about your sight lines: It looks like the table is currently centered on an opening to a living room. When looking at the kitchen from that room, do you want to see a formal dining table that can be decorated seasonally, or view kitchen bar stools? Think about your traffic patterns and lighting: Changing to bar stools & banquette would open a wide space in the middle of that room -- where you would bonk your head on the chandelier. How do you envision your lighting plan changing to accommodate that? Recessed cans? Moving the big chandelier over the banquette would likely make the room feel unbalanced. All of these issues are solvable. They just require forethought and an understanding of the trade-offs. At my house, we got rid of the eat-in kitchen table & chandelier altogether and extended the countertop for bar stools. We needed the floor space for a clear pathway to the new family room addition beyond. We also have a formal dining room elsewhere in the house, so, functionally, keeping the eat-in kitchen table was not necessary for us....See MoreColor and Shape of Dining Table for built-in Banquette?
Comments (14)Thank you for the responses I appreciate your time and suggestions. This is a newly built vacation home and the model showed with a high top seating for 4. With seniors and small children in the picture backing out of your chair would dent the wall due to space limitations. We were going to put a full cushion just on the seat but like the wood so much and as mentioned the ease of access sliding in and out we aren't going to get cushions for now. As this is our first full summer in the new house we will try it out for awhile then come back to that. There will be no permanent seating opposite the banquette as it would be in the pathway to the kitchen so when company comes we will pull out folding card table chairs. If cushioning is needed on the banquette we may consider individual seat cushions?? Another feature of the banquette is badly needed storage in this small home we had the banquette custom built with 5 full extension drawers with 100lb capacity slides and the same wood as the kitchen cabinets. I would say mountain rustic/modern simple lines is the theme, comfort and function are a priority. Does the table top color in the photo go with the wood flooring and banquette wood color? Or should I look for a dark wood table?...See MoreLighting help for unconventional kitchen with banquette dining!
Comments (18)Two options, put track and then install some swag hooks for when you need to lift them. BUT a light that is on a pully, meaning though it would stay in place when the table is pulled out it could also be raised up out of the way and almost become a semi flush while still giving plenty of light, it would also go with the rustic/vintage style. If you continue the track I would complete the U shape and bring it around that way you have no dark spots. ( personally I would have done 2 circuit track so you could opt to have all or some of the lights on). They also make pendant adapters for track so you could hang pendants off the track and just get some cheapies to see if you like that look. I think you would over time become annoyed at having to move them up and over....See MoreRelated Professionals
