So this would require three of these kits, but this is what I have. Its held up here we get moderately heavy rain so I put weather stripping between the louvers where they meet (theres a small gap and weather stripping is soft so it makes a good seal). Ive had it a few years without issue. It had a design that basically has internal gutters. So far its been a dream.

"This is what I have" -- do you already have the kits? If not, you might want to rethink buying them.

What is the objective with the pergola and its adjustable louvers -- are you wanting mostly sunlight except also want protection when it rains? I suspect the louvers will not actually seal out the rain.

If the east and west are the sides of the 12' space, absent shade and view and breeze blocking material, the early and late sun likely will enter the entire space ... is that what you intend?

What, if any, options do you have with any kits that you already have ordered/purchased?

Suspect your best "heating" idea for a very open structure is going to be a BBQ or fire pit -- and running any kind of pipe or chimney thru adjustable shutters would require cutting through the shutters.

I built our pergola egg-crate style using 2x12’s on 24” centers. It shades quite effectively. Before the adjacent trees matured, we had canvas pull-down shades on the sides to block low sun. If it’s raining, we go indoors.

@suezbell i haven't bought anything. I think @Jesse Fay was saying what they did. Because we are in California, the primary reason to go adjustable would be to reduce sunlight/heat during midday. Rain protection is a nice feature but less important for us.

As far as sun, there's no sun coming from the morning (east) sun because of trees on that side. Around 11am depending on the season, it will start coming into play. It gets hot between 12 and 4pm as the sun moves to the western skies. And nothing will prevent sun coming into the space from the sides unless we do a front screen. But our thought is that the late afternoon/early evening sun won't be as problematic from the sides.

If shade and air flow are the objectives, then a tiered solid roof , with or without gable ends and/or a ceiling fan might be worth considering. In something like this, the heat could rise and go out the events between the two roof tiers.
