Thanks Lisa, and everyone else who complimented the color! I've tried BM Duxbury Gray, BM Gray Owl and BM Fieldstone and none worked quite the way I wanted in the last few months. So I understand the frustration of seeing a color look great in someone else's home but not work in your own. I ended up mixing the Gray Owl and Fieldstone and came up with a color that I really like. It is my second choice for the family room along with Revere Pewter. I'm going to start a new thread for that so please stop by and take a look. DH said this B&B wainscot was the easiest project I've given him yet and the cheapest. We did picture frame wainscoting in the study and dining room earlier this year and added a coffered ceiling to the dining room. You can see a hint of each in the photos above. The wainscoting for the stairs is made of 1 sheet of 1/2" MDF cut into 3 inch width's. The entire project, w/o paint, cost $30. I was at work when he did it (I supervise too much) and he said once he figured out the correct angles that the sawing and nailing part only took a couple of hours.

When it comes to transition areas, it's often a good idea to go with a neutral as they are more versatile. Transitional areas like entryway/hallways can have SO many colours going off of them, and choosing a 'colour' for this area, can limit you in other rooms. Hi I have used Rockport Grey (HC-105) beside Revere Pewter and I think they go together really well. A really nice lighter colour that ties together is pale oak(OC-20). The rockport grey has a green undertone to my eye and I really like it. I have these two colours in adjoining rooms and they look great without having a jarring difference between the two. I know it looks really dark in the picture of the chips attached but have a look and see if it might work for you.

so you want to put another type of wood (or wood look laminate) next to the real, darker wood that borders it? That isn't going to look good. either use the same wood/stain, or, use another type of tile. if you want to keep your existing wood, can it be sanded and stained a lighter tone? then you could just stain the new wood portion to match in w/the older flooring. Or, redo all of the flooring to a different, light wood, like this French Oak If you just want to do the one room, then choose a larger format tile (24x24, 30x30, or a 18x36 size) here are some options that Tilebar.com has. I love this Limestone look porcelain tile. and it would match your walls (matte finish, 24x24) touchstone, Misty Gray:
