Help with redesigning master suite/closet
Comments (0)Dear all, I am designing a new house and we have liked pretty much everything in the current plan except perhaps the master closet. Somehow the layout does not seem like most efficient to me, and I am interested in sharing and hearing ideas about this arrangement. My choices are either to move the walk in closet to the extreme right wall (since as per the building rules we cannot have any clear windows there due to neighbor privacy). I am quite happy with the way the bathroom has shaped up, but would gladly consider another option if it gives me a similarly large vanity and shower, and enclosed WC (those are my requirements). But the main focus is on the closet; current plan is his-and-her, but that is not a must. Getting most storage from the space is important. Larger closet is 7'x5', smaller is 5'x5'. Thank you, and hope to hear comments! Thanks in advance!!...See MoreMaster closet redesign
Comments (4)Thanks for your responses! I've continued to play around with the design, and I found ClosetMaid Impressions and decided I liked the look of their product more than the Martha Stewart, and the cost is about the same. My new layout isn't drastically different. Again, walls A and C are mirror images of each other. I removed the corner shelf units because one would have interfered with the closet door, and I'll need space to store a laundry hamper on the floor for dirty clothes. I'm considering the flat surface. On A and C, I could put shelves above the drawers, leaving space open. I am just cautious about flat surfaces because I share the closet with a spouse who loves to fill flat surfaces with clutter. :-( I am cognizant of the need for space in the corners. If I decide it's too cramped, I can shorten the double-hanging space during installation. There will be a bench in the middle of the room for sitting while you dress....See MoreRedesigning Closet Space - Murphy Door Option
Comments (11)I was not familiar with the term Murphy door so I had to go check out the info. You would need a fairly substantially deep closet for that type of door to work. Most newer closets don't have enough depth for that solution. My suggestion for newer closets is a storage rack of the back of a solid door that fits in the door jamb space. Most closets could use a rack about 4 inches deep possibly up to 6 inches. As the rack gets deeper, the placement and measurements are more important to keep from interfering with the use of the closet. That is a great place for shoes, accessories, purses, or other such items. For most situations, the Murphy door hardware would be unnecessary expense unless the space was specifically built to take advantage of the setup...See MoreCloset redesign
Comments (1)Hanging clothing uses 2 feet. If you have the rod as far back as possible, that only leaves 2 feet. I wouldn’t call that a walk-in. Or are you suggesting one access door clear at one end and walking along a 2-foot-wide alleyway for the entire length of 10’? I don’t want to assume how wide you are, but I think my body is approaching 2’ wide. That wouldn’t work well for me....See MoreRajeev Bector
