Should new wall extend to ceiling for shower?

My toilet is too close to the shower for comfort. I'm planning to turn it 90°. After doing so, there will be enough space to make the shower bigger. Right now I have a corner shower with a door that cuts across at a 45° angle and that eats up a lot of space within the shower. So, I want to add a wall (blue line) for this dual sliding door assembly (see pic). I want sliding doors so I can reach in and turn on the water without having to get in first and I can't have a door that swing left because of the tub. Anyhooo, I want to know if the new wall has to go to the ceiling or if it can stop at the shower door height. I don't want to have to relocate the fan vent on the ceiling so a shorter wall is preferred. And if I go with the shorter wall, how high should the tile go on the other 2 shower walls? I also included the wall and floor tiles I like. I want to add a shower seat and niches in the new wall, what tile should I use in the niches and for the seat? Would removable glass shelves in the niches be ok? Does anyone like the seats that attach to the wall and can fold up out of the way? I wonder how sturdy they are.

First, the vent should be moved if you extend the shower as it shouldn't be in shower area. thus regardless if the glass on the shower goes to the ceiling.

Now for the good, shower glass only has to go (minimum height) just above the height that your shower head screws in. The higher the glass goes though the more steam it keeps in. mine it set to go in with only a small clearance to the ceiling as i like more steam.

Accent or nook tiles are usually more decorative if you want to draw attention to it. if you want it to be as if it isnt there, you would use the same tile. Most people (as very beautiful tile is quite expensive, use a plainer cheaper tile around the shower and this beautiful tile in the nook to showcase the tile. Keep in mind that where ever this nook tile is will draw the eye away from the rest of the bathroom tile, so if you or your partner love symmetry, be careful where you have the nook.

Lastly, just an opinion, if you want a door-less or a more hinged door look there are two other options. First would be to move the shower head. But this isn't a great option for corner showers as there isnt another really good spot for it (in general). Instead, look into the second option with is to take your glass into a professional glass company (or if you decide to have one made to your dimensions, just let them before you purchase) and have them cut out a square or hole near the side that your shower handles are. this will allow you to reach your hand in and turn on the shower without opening any doors. Just something to consider.

Thank you, Jesse, that's a lot of good information. I'm in planning phase now. I'll have the vent moved and plan to take the new wall to the ceiling. I've never seen shower glass with that cutout, brilliant! Is your shower ceiling tiled? I'm asking because I am worried about too much moisture collecting in mine. JuneKnow, I had a plumber here for a quote, when he said he'd get back to me in a week with the quote, that kind of told me it's going to cost more than I thought to move the toilet over. I'll call a few more people in the meantime. I really appreciate the feedback!

I think taking the rest of the cabs to the ceiling on that armoire wall will detract from the armoire. You already have a stunning presentation and I think the armoire to the ceiling breaks up the scene and adds interest....taking the others to the ceiling will make it feel oppresive and possibly, ahem, overdone. Just my humble opinion....and I may add I am taking my cabs to the ceiling but in a much smaller and less impressive space. What about taking the hood cabinet over the range to the ceiling?? I think it might nicely mirror the armoire somewhat and I could see it there. But, it would only be for looks, not for storage function. Good luck! Tina Good luck! Tina

The only tricky part is matching the crown moulding. If you can get more of your existing stuff, then the rest is pretty easy. Actually, maybe there's a couple of potential issues. (1) Is that smoke detector in the way of wall extension? If so (and it's hardwired) then you'll need some electrical work to move it. (2) Which way do the ceiling joists run? If it's parallel to the wall you want to extend AND there isn't a joist right above the wall then it could be tricky to attach the wall at the point where it meets the ceiling. If the ceiling is textured, punching holes in it to attach a cross piece between joists could result in attempting to match the current texture when patching the ceiling, which can be difficult to do. Otherwise, it's just a simple job of framing it out and mounting drywall. I'm not really sure how you think it'll give more privacy though since it'll still be open on the side facing the closet.

First, you need to confirm that the switch HAS a hot and neutral. One way to wire a switch is to use a "switch loop" which doesn't involve having a neutral. Google that term if you want to understand what I mean. Second, you can't just staple the cable to the wall. NM cable (which is what you actually mean when you say romex) needs physical protection. Either it needs to be behind the drywall or you need to run it in conduit.

As someone who is searching for my next home, I selfishly ask you to do nothing more than paint, if you must. 😁. Your kitchen is certainly something I could live with. It’s pretty actually, though not exact my taste. It’s got a good solid surface of granite, adequate storage, decent appliances. I see so many homes on the market that have been “refreshed” for selling and I usually dislike the updates. Since the price of the home most likely includes (at least some) of the cost of those updates, I have rejected many homes for this reason. Who wants to spend $50-100k more for someone else’s ideas. And tearing that $50-100k out?? Yikes, no. So, selfishly, please, paint only. And keep the walls!! I may be in the minority, but I don’t like open plan. You have a lovely kitchen. Use that money for a fun retirement.

@Tina M My ceiling is being tiled with white square tiles so its not immediately noticeable but will also allow for the moisture to to not affect the ceiling. Its a little more expensive than you'd think (about 10 dollars a square foot) but worth it.
