Get a new vanity that is so dated and honestly the hassle of filling those grooves perfectly is IMO not worth it. The counter also is driving all the other choices you might want to change. I like drawer storage in vanities and if budget is tight look at Godmorgon from Ikea , very afforadable can come with the sinks too.

Agree with Patricia. The cabinets look like formica so painting might be a problem....you do not need to get a new cabinet although big box stores have plenty of options....you could find a used dresser and use that? Or Craigs list on bathroom vanities for sale.....

Are you asking because you can't spend the money to replace the vanity right now? Or do you want to keep it because of the vintage "charm" of it? I'm assuming if you wanted to change the vanity out, you wouldn't be asking about doing some minor changes to this one. On that assumption, I wouldn't try to fill in the grooves, because you would have to paint the whole vanity to cover the fill in. Being a Formica surface, painting wouldn't be a good choice for it. However, painting the grooves would work. I'd pick the darkest shade of the taupey color in the Formica pattern for the grooves. Also, definitely change out the hardware for something more current. But, it looks like the cabinet hardware has a scroll back plate on it, so that might leave a mark on the cabinet front if you remove it. Maybe take one off and check if this is the case.

Paint the grooves. Your kitchen cabinets had similar grooves from a post a couple years ago. Did you decide to make any changes in the kitchen?

@amy Lynn we are planning on completely gutting and redoing our upstairs (this bathroom included in 2 years), so for the meantime I just wanted to do a little painting or something. I love your advice of painting the grooves. I will remove a piece of hardware and see. I'm also thinking of painting the walls white too. thanks again

@applepieorder oddly enough we moved and have similar cupboards twice. we are still planning on doing a total renovation (getting closer approx. 2 years. we've been saving and want to have the cash and not go in debt). I have not changed the kitchen because everyone said I would have to rip it all out. But I love the idea of painting the grooves. I never thought of that. thanks!

Brittany, I think changing out the wall color is a great idea. Right now, it really plays up the pinkish counters. I think a soft white would calm things down. If you think about it when you're done, please post a before and after pic. This may be helpful for people looking for a short term refresh on these types of cabinets. Good luck on your project!
