I lost my Granny
Comments (8)lost an aunt when I was three. have lost people since-but she and I were close in a way that I didn't think would ever be duplicated. the first place I ever drove on my own was to her grave. I don't NEED to be there to talk to her- but at times when I was most alone in the world, I spent a lot of time there- I'd take a book, or just sit and pick the weeds out of the grass while I talked to her... my husband understands me like she did (oddly enough, he had an almost identical aunt who he misses very much) and before he met my parents, I took him to see her...and he's enough of a Goth to recognize the act as one of supreme trust, and treated it with the greatest respect. the only thing that's in your head is that it's anyone else's damned business how much you miss your gran- or for how long, or how you express it. I'm sorry that you have fallen in with such a shallow bunch if nitwits, but I sorrow that they have never been loved deeply enough to mourn the loss of the hand that held them. it's been 32 years, and she's still a central figure in my life- we took the same majors in college (art, art, and more art) the party frocks she made me are tucked away against the day I have a little girl of my own...and the smell of 4711 can stop me in my tracks from two blocks away. actually, I went to see Bobby Mc Ferrin and his chorus perform about a month ago, and one of the few lines in the evening spoken in English (as opposed to McFerrin, which is a language all its own) and as long as we remember, they will stay with us. we are one of the few cultures that DON"T venerate our ancestors, build them shrines in the hearth, or the garden, and bring our children to them for blessings. I think we are the poorer for it....See MoreAm I Wrong to Feel This Way?
Comments (16)Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you have doubt about someone else's view of a phototgraphic image, or some other situation; try to breathe and relax, and when feeling more relaxed do ask them. You can ask your husband why he likes photography, or putting together particular images. You can find out directly from him in this kind of way, at least some of the whys. (He might have had some intentions which could help with your hurt feelings.) What do the photos mean to him, or what do they remind him of? (try to get his point of view about what he was thinking when he picked this or that photo). Feelings just are, and the challenge is to manage them as they occur. Just knowing and being aware of them is a good first step. P.S. New Years is coming up, and even regular days of the week in case that holiday is already spoken for; but you can share any ideas with him about how you can share some personal time-- or experience which could help a lot to reinforce that you are a unique and a valued person to him. (It's similar to that week in the mountains, but this kind of thing could be shorter and done for anniversaries and birthdays too-- or any time it is important to do)....See MoreWindow Replacement -the quote makes me feel ill, do you feel the same?
Comments (73)Thanks @todd!! Hopefully the heat buildup won't be an issue. I called up Provia (such nice people) and after describing my set-up and the lack of direct sun, they said it shouldn't be an problem. For issue 2, the window that came was smaller than the exterior rough opening, which leads me to believe it could/should have been bigger. My general contractor had already framed the walls using the original windows as guides, so this smaller window throws everything off. Anyway, they are in now. Have you ever saw drywall put in at an angle, where I'd start it where the wall framing is and angle inward to meet the window frame, or is that a ridiculous thought? The caulking you use sounds more sensible. Alas, that ugly, gloppy white caulking with whatever crap blew by in the wind and stuck to it is in, so I guess I'm going to have to live with it. And the softness of the pine, oh if i knew this, I might have made different choices. The guys filled the gouges with putty, but of course you can still see them. Brand new windows and they are already looking cruddy. What a bummer this all is....See MoreJust out of curiosity.. anyone feel the same way??
Comments (7)I agree that plants by itself are an art piece, but just as an art piece looks better when it fits the room it's in , so different plants can be used with more or less success as decorative sculptures in the room. and as such they need a frame if you will. the proper pot can really enhance a plant or perhaps supporting poles in form of an artful scaffold of sorts that is sculptural. grouping plants together of course can be beautiful, in several pots or in a large pot as an arrangement. if you think of a plant grouping as a bouquet, you can develop some ideas about what can work as sculpture/support. it does not have to be anchored in the pot , it could be behind or next to it. then the mirrors, lighting and objects around also can be used to create various moods. you see where I am going ? :) of course, when combining the plants you need to know their growing requirements, but also look at the colors of the foliage. combine close or contrasting colors. look at leaf shapes too. think quilt..some colors go others do not. all of the above showcases the plants, but also adds a decorative element to them. whether indoors or outdoors....See Moredamask_rose_zone9b
