I offer this with an element of contempt. I don't like sayings or adages like these, I find them trite.

Especially the ones often found painted on wood or with other kinds of drippy formats and hanging on walls in people's kitchens or family rooms. Or on the wall in powder rooms. Gag me with a spoon.

I like sayings sometimes. They offer an uplift to an often otherwise sour world.

"gag me with a spoon" is about the most trite so far.

Yogi Berra:

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

"You can observe a lot by just watching."

"You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there."

Walt Kelly (from a Pogo book):

"A woman's not always a woman, but a good cigar is a horse of another feather."

I especially like the quotes Walt Kelly has at the beginning of each chapter in his Pogo books.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.
