Personally I think you're smart to get rid of the walk-in pantry, they lose a lot of space because they have to leave room for you to walk in. The pull-out pantries are way more efficient. As for the wall ovens, I would get rid of them and just have a range--this from a person who loves to cook and bake! In fact, then you could have two tall pantries next to the fridge. On of the pantries would be perfect for storing small kitchen appliances. You could even have plugs built into it and have your microwave, toaster, coffee maker, mixer etc permanently stored there.

Had a wall oven, traded it in for a range with 2 ovens. Best decision ever. If I prep something on the island or sear meat before popping it in the oven, everything is in the same spot... whereas my wall ovens were on the other side of the kitchen from my prep space and cooktop.

This is my kitchen. You could do something like this in between the fridge and pantry, that way your kids would have an area to reheat leftovers and make their own snacks thereby staying out of your way! For reference, I store all of my dry goods ( minus baking supplies & spices which have there own area) in three of these cabinets and the short cabinet above the microwave stores lunch boxes. That's my entire pantry space for a family of four.

And yes, possibly double width if I nix the wall ovens and only have a range on that exterior wall. Good to hear that confirmed! Kitchens are such a big deal that I don't want to make a huge mistake!

And you're so right! I asked our design team to put them pantry by the door so kids (and husband) will stay out of the way. I'm constantly asking them to sit on the barstool side and stay out of the work side when I'm prepping dinner. Smart to have the microwave near your pantry too. And I do think I overbuy pantry items. I can't see everything I currently have so buy duplicates. I need to get rid of a lot of stuff. We're redoing more of the house and I'm actually looking forward to having to pack and get rid of things. We've lived here eight years and stuff accumulates, especially with kids!

@megs1030 good to hear that a person who cooks prefers a range! How wide is yours? I'm wondering if I should get a range that has double ovens. I just have the one wall oven now and have only once or twice in 8 years wished that I had a second.

They are so much work, but all the extra thought makes a big difference. I LOVE my new kitchen! On choice I made that I am happy about is making my wall cabinets for the pantry area 15"deep. The counter is still perfectly usable but that extra 3" means cereal boxes, bulk size granola bar boxes and bags of chips still fit. That stuff never fit in my 12" deep cabinets from before.

@stiley, my range is 55”. It’s a Lacanche Cluny 1400.

I have never had a wall oven and see no reason to have one (and I cook and bake daily). I love my range - GE Cafe with two ovens, standard 30" width. If I had a larger kitchen I might consider a 36" but I don't feel limited with the 30".

How about (a) leaving counter space to the right of the refigerator where you could place a grocery bag to unload it; (b) replacing "new cooktop" with a 30" induction range; (c) putting a microwave oven and toaster on the countertop near the three stools where it would be convenient to diners who want to heat something up or toast a bagel? Forty-two inch refrigerators are dramatically more expensive than 36" models: $9000+ on appliancesconnection.com.

Range lover here too, 48" with 2 ovens. The small is surprisingly handy because it preheats much quicker. I got rid of a walk-in pantry and have now a "reach in/jump in pantry"...at 4' deep there isn't much walking going on.

@wdccruise thanks for those thoughts. I like the idea of doing a range vs a cooktop. We currently have a 36" side-by-side fridge and it's just not big enough for us. Although the kitchen is #3 on our project priority list so so we'll have to see how the budget comes out. We are adding an appliance garage where the old pantry was to house the toaster and maybe coffee maker. But @biondanonima (Zone 7a Hudson Valley) I saw some pretty coffee makers on the Cafe site! It's my dream to have clear counters. Maybe not realistic since I live with people. :)

It really depends on how much room you have and if you need to conserve countertops but there are advantages to a separate cooktop/rangetop and wall ovens.

You can pick exactly the type of burners you want. You might want more burners and a smaller oven or vice versa. With a range you pick one or the other and get what comes with it.

You might want the body mechanics of having your oven at eye level.

If the oven fails, you don’t have to replace the whole range.

These things may or may not apply for you but they do for some. I have a 36” range and wall oven and wish I had put in a rangetop plus 2 wall ovens.

Not sure the ages of your children, but I didn’t like a range oven when I had younger children at my feet. Now that I’m much older, it is more difficult and concerning to bend over a pull something out of the oven.

@Sheri Noble. Thanks, that is something I've considered. My kids are 2nd and 5th grade, so old enough to start cooking themselves. When they were little, the open wall oven was right at hand/face level, so we had lots of warnings about "hot." And I've read threads about how bending over to get heavy things out of a range is harder. But that will (hopefully) be in 20 years, and we'd redo the kitchen then anyway. My parents recently redid their kitchen, and my mom chose another range. I do like the idea of a double oven in the range, as I'd probably use the smaller one most of the time.

I would try to pace out how you usually cook in thinking about the range and sink locations. I'm most likely to go from fridge to counter to sink to counter to range. I know a lot of people go fridge straight to sink to counter to range (ice, water, stone, fire). Your current set up would be a lot of extra steps for many people and switching the range and sink would help. Obviously you know your workflow best.

If you keep it as, I would put the DW on the other side of the sink so it's out of the prep space.

Your plan doesn't have any measurements so just a reminder to check you have adequate aisles, especially in a kitchen with so many people underfoot. Basically every aisle is a work aisle so 48" (measured counter edge to counter edge).

You’ll be surprised at how much larger the range ovens can be than wall ovens. This is due to a lot of details but mainly because its easier to fit the electronics, thermal buffering, etc into a range so the oven cavity is bigger....

Although I’m partial to wall ovens (being one of those freaks that likes to hide every possible appliance due to the common open-concept living)......I can’t deny how nice it would be to have the ovens that are available in a range.

I always say: the kitchen you’ll LOVE MOST is a kitchen thats functional for how YOU live. You can have the most magazine ready kitchen & still hate it if it doesn’t work for your lifestyle so forget all the fads & “rules” (as long as its not a structural or code rule hah)....If ur family tends to reach for snacks, drinks, etc while ur cooking then I say make it a priority to place your work triangle outside that zone!

Wall pantries can absolutely hold just as much *if not more* than many of the small corner pantries that often have awkward corner shelves which are wasted storage space. straight boxes with pull outs don’t suffer wasted space which makes it possible to hold more items ☺️.

I can see why you’d want to double up the next wall pantry area...Have u considered placing the cooktop in the corner & the wall ovens in the cabinet area beside the new closed in opening (in place of the upper/lowers)?

@sarahsaccount24 thank you for those ideas. You're right, I currently do laps around the island. We're not doing a full gut remodel, and the sink and dishwasher must stay where they are--that run of lower cabinets is staying but getting new doors. We can play with the fridge wall and the cooktop wall. Currently, we seem to do most work on the island, even though counter space is limited because of the cooktop. So I'm hoping that having a wide open island will help with prep space. Plus our cooktop has a downdraft vent right in the middle, and I'm noticing more and more how that gets in the way. I feel like that's a win to get it off the island and onto an exterior wall.

@Perfectly Painted Designs I want magazine-worthy AND functional! :) I'm encouraged by what you said about the size of range ovens. Y'all are convincing me that I'm not crazy to do a wall pantry, so that's a relief. What do you mean by putting the cooktop in the corner? This is kind of how the current layout will be on the left wall: https://pin.it/3kC49jY My plan is to have stone counters (material TBD) with the same backsplash and a small shelf above the range/cooktop. The upper cabinets next to the new doorway won't come out all the way so that the doorway doesn't feel crowded.

Yes that's correct, but uppers will be not as deep. I would like that to be an appliance garage. We have 9 ft ceilings in there but current cabinets aren't making the most of the height.
