White Shaker-style cabinets, lite maple flooring. counter color?
Comments (4)How about Ikea's butcherblock? It's super affordable and you could do a darker color (beech, stained... or their oak is actually really nice) to contrast with your maple floors: Here's a kitchen with wood floors, butcherblock on the island and it looks like soapstone perimeters:...See Moreshould I update my 1996 laminate counters & paint/stain cabinets
Comments (12)You can replace the laminate countertops with some nice-looking pre-fab laminate slabs from the big box stores for a few hundred dollars. I'd definitely do that over granite, which will tend to look like lipstick on a pig. Some people do actually like oak, and others won't mind it, so if there are no scratches on them and you can clean them so they sparkle, update the hardware and put new laminate down, that may be the biggest bang for your buck. A lot depends on what your competition looks like, of course. If, to compete, you feel you do need to do more than make them shine, then I think painting or staining would be a good idea if you can make it look nice. The choice of light vs. dark depends on the lighting in your room. If you can post photos we can vote....See Morecabinet color to go with silver glass backsplash & black/grey granite
Comments (6)The combination of backsplash and counter strikes me as rather more modern but the bit of cabinet that I can see looks more "country" or rustic. I think I would consider painting the cabinets navy (if that will work with the rest of your house and the amount of light in the kitchen), and get sleeker knobs and pulls. If you decide to go with a white, make sure you paint a large sample to be sure it is the correct white to go with the grays (one with more of a gray or blue undertone, not yellow or pink)...See MorePartial kitchen update- Maple cabinets to go or not to go?
Comments (19)Definitely understand about budget. Replacing the cabinets is going to be the biggest line item, though, so it's something you want to do once and do right. Filling in the pass-through should be a relatively inexpensive task that will give you a much more functional layout. As for the sink, I think you will find that the corner becomes much MORE useful without a sink taking up so much space. The big triangle behind a corner sink is basically dead space with a faucet blocking it, but is useful if you can actually reach it as a regular counter....See MoreRachel Lee
