Remodeling Design Dilemma home office

We need to create a better office nook. We want better storage and are ready for the space to look more cohesive with our kitchen.

We have an odd size beam and an irregular wall, so figuring out cabinets and shelves is a bit tough.

The fridge panel to the beam is 71 inches, and the beam is 6.5 inches wide.

1) A 71 inch long table seems long for an office but if it is shorter, I’m not sure how I would best utilize the remaining space.

2) Wall cabinets or open shelves? I’m also wondering other ways to stay organized without being surrounded in clutter, because the kitchen island is our catch-all space.

Below is a design that was offered to us. But I worry that all the wall cabinets would make the space look more closed in with the beam right next to it.

IMO We'll need to see the rest of the kitchen if we want to make a determination about the cohesiveness of the kitchen with the office. Speaking from personal experience, if one wants to properly deal with clutter closed cabinets are the way to go. If you and I were total neat freaks, open shelving might be an option. Is there any other spot in your home for this office? If you are thinking of selling in the next five years, an office kitchen of this size may need to relocated to a better location in the home. If you are keeping this home for more than five years, do what you want. I like defined areas in the home - kitchen be a kitchen, office be an office, etc., but that's me. If you or a potential buyer has a family, I can't see how on earth they can use a kitchen and be able to concentrate in an office at the same time. Fine for a single person, however.

You need all that closed storage. Just make sure your equipment fits in the spaces, or you’ll be adding more bits again.

Sorry, I don't think it's the right spot for a wet bar or coffee bar. It's right at the doorway and you'd be blocking the door when you're at the bar. Also, if entertaining, why would you want to leave guests to make drinks in the corner with your back to them. I don't know if you cook but I vote for a pantry. Otherwise, I'd bring the laundry back. I dislike not having my washer and dryer in a climate controlled area of the house.

@megs1030 The Kichler pendant in the picture is 15.75" Height x 10.50" Width. Island is 94"x 41" and ceiling height is 9 ft. Table is 48 in. This set will be replaced as well (the idea is to get something with a combination of white and brushed nickel or stainless still but same size). @acm Those look great. The island pendants and the nook light fixture are only 8 ft apart (from center to center). I'm wondering if switching from what I have now - mini pendants, 7" x 4" - to something much bigger as these Kichler ones (mentioned above) won't look too busy when combined with the nook. They look great but I don't mind finding something smaller if that is what it takes to bring the perfect balance.

Perhaps look into allocating space for all of the extra office stuff by adding open shelves above the current desk you have.
