Kitchen remodel - let's start with layout
Comments (22)My biggest concern with that would be that the distance from the fridge to "my corner" would be about 15 feet and a loss of efficiency. Plus I talked to my husband about moving or resizing the island, and he is opposed basically because he doesn't want to do a darn thing to the floor so he wants the basic footprint of the kitchen to stay the same so we don't have to refinish. Personally, I love the above idea of keeping the window wall open ready and waiting for us to knock it out and install french doors, but we weren't planning on touching the plumbing. Unfortunately our budget just doesn't allow for it. So, I really am listening to the suggestions while thinking of the money. Why didn't I win that darn lotto jackpot. In the interest of the almighty budget, I think we will keep it mostly as is with some minor tweaks. I think I can move the stove down about 6 inches or so which widens my workspace and on the other side a wee bit, we will just have a cabinet for cutting boards and stuff on the bottom and a pull out spice rack on the top. It will be off center. Will that look funny? Hopefully it will be OK. We are going to do cabinets to the ceilings (I am pretty adamant about this, but the cabinet guy said that it would increase the cost quite a bit so fingers crossed), we are adding another pantry cabinet on the other side of the fridge, we are going to have a new 6 foot bank of cabinets built to house a wine fridge and make a little bar area in the current area where the hutch is. I think that with these small changes we'll get some added storage space and get an updated look without breaking the bank too much. Going back to the vent hood, I talked to the husband about the vent hood, he thinks they can do it through the ceiling and then just vent it to the side of the house, so we'll price that. I do like the look of it. The microwave we can hide away in one of the pantry cabinets....See MoreOriginal 1966 Kitchen/Living Room Remodel Ideas
Comments (61)Hi Guys, Long time no post. :) We've been quite busy! We replaced the boiler (a rather harrowing experience), talked to a well known MCM architect here in Minnesota, visited various cabinet construction facilities (got a tour of the shop!), visited Ikea to see the new sektion line, visited flooring stores, etc. In the mean time I've been thinking about some of the advise I've gotten here and from the architect we talked to and tried to make some modifications to the original design. I sort of like it, but it didn't pass the wife test. She likes the stacked stone look, and in some ways likes that the upstairs is more closed off, but doesn't like how it segments the living room away and is afraid it might make it too dark (I think that might actually be nice for viewing the TV, but oh well). She liked the original design better in that regard, so it's probably back to the drawing board. Figured I'd post it here though in case anyone had any thoughts. Other things we are kind of generally gravitating toward after visiting cabinet/flooring shops: - Rift sawn white oak or quarter-sawn maple slab cabinets. Probably horizontal grain. (yes, the picture shows shaker, that's just what the program has available) - strand woven eucalyptus flooring. Worried about cupping with humidity, need to find out how stable it really is. Also concerned about ability to refinish in 5-10 years. Not particularly green if you have to replace it all! Alternatives might be doing quarter/rift sawn oak or maple (should be very stable) like the cabinets. Costs a lot more though. - Want to integrate some stacked stone or long tile. There's a MCM house we almost bought (so close!) that had an entryway we loved with long pieces of mixed height ledgstone or stacked stone. Trying to see if we can integrate something like that into the design....See MoreNeed serious advice on remodel of living room joint kitchen!
Comments (26)I didnt have anything nice to say when you said 5 grand and hiring out. But now since we are talking illegitimacy here we go. Since you still dont have a floor plan as recommended, I have my doubts you have the knowledge to DIY or hire out for 5 grand. Your inspiration pictures are nice but you either need more money to hire out or more knowledge to DIY. You can buy cabinets and appliances all you want but if you cant install them, install the plumbing, move electrical, do flooring, do structural work with the wall, then FORGET IT. Oh and get a permit (probably wont) so you can ensure it is done right and legal. When we say legal, we are talking about what some would call an "in-law suite". People typically think of a separate dwelling for older folks who need someone close but want their space. Same idea for younger folks who could use a separate space. I feel it is an great idea to have, however, some zoning locations do not allow it. The permit would tell you if it was ok or not to do. Your insurance also needs to know about it. Comments (9)the white cabinets shown with the granite you picked is very cool toned. Your floor should change to a cooler terra cotta tone..not the yellow amber tile shown. So, what you are saying is the current situation is the layout but all the elements are changing? A white subway tile is good for backsplash as cabinets chosen have nice detail...you don't need anything to draw more attention. Just get a different floor tile....See MoreRelated Professionals
