Some of you might remember me from five years ago - Philadelphia row home galley kitchen with “The Door” to the patio.
Now, I am in my 84yo mom’s very old stone house as she recovers from hip replacement. Here is her kitchen. I’m not asking for advice here, Just showing you a somewhat charming but completely non-functional space.

Comments (11)Hello Searn, I can't find any information on the Ball Eclipse. However, the design sounds identical to the All-American made by WAFCO. I'm wondering if years ago they made their canner under the Ball Eclipse name. WAFCO has been very helpful in the past when Forum members have called. Given their long history in the business, at the very least they might be able to connect you with someone who can answer your question. It's a long shot but worth trying. Comments (19)I just don't get all these posts about induction having a learning curve. Took me about 5 minutes to figure it out. I will conceed the touch pad point -- I know some people don't like them (even younger people). But the controls are not hard to use. Instead of a dial with low, med, high and several notches between, you have a numbered 1-10 system. No biggie. I think a senior (or anyone) interested enough in induction to consider buying it is also intelligent enough to understand why their old pots won't work. Sheesh -- you don't have a very high opinion of seniors' intelligence do you Antss. If you're in the KB industry, it might behoove you to drop some of your stereotypical ideas. Seniors don't all live in poverty and in many cases have much more spending power than younger people. Seems like your attitudes could turn away a lot of good customers. I don't mean to sound **tchy. Comments (8)Thanks for the responses! I'm sorry the example pic is so terrible. It's just a pic I found on the web and not my mom's Christmas table, I swear. Sue and Yayagal, those are the two colors I thought of right away! Glad to know I'm thinking in the right direction. Fun, love your suggestions about scrapbook paper. I know that will definitely help my mom with visualizing a color. And I really like the fabric idea too. I'm hoping I can convince my mom that the old red and cream buffalo check cafe curtains have had their day and fabric behind the dishware would bring nice texture back in the room. I will try to get a picture this weekend when I go visit her. She lives two hours away and is not computer savvy. I wanted to get some direction before I went so that we could get started. My youngest brother is moving out this month (he bought the house next door....we joke that one day he will leave the block!), so it will be just she and my dad for the first time in 35 years. She is going to downsize the big table in the middle of the room (she still has a large table in the DR for family gatherings) for a smaller breakfast nook in the corner by the windows and put a moveable island in its place....See MoreMy mom and her recipes....
Comments (13)We have coated cardboard milk cartons that are just over 3 inches, or nearer to 4 inches wide, which I open at the top and cut down one side, then slide two together and staple, to be just longer than a business-sized envelope. I save non-window envelopes (the ones with windows tend to bind when the box gets nearly filled) and use them to store my receipts for purchases, month by month, with the name of the month written on the upper corner, holding the receipts together with a paper clip. The fact that most of the receipts are much narrower than the envelopes are high means that there's extra space at the top to make it easy to check the top corners to see which month I'm seeking and that might be more difficult if you had the envelopes filled to the top. Such an idea would work less well if many of your recipe cards were much higher than the depth of an envelope. You might choose to use a thicker paper, such as the weight of a corn flakes box, to cut to the size needed to label which type of recipes that envelope contained, cutting it high enough to stick up higher than the tallest recipe, and placing it in the back of that envelope. For recipes nearly the size of an 8-11/2 x 11 sheet, you could fold them, or possibly need to be keep them in a file folder, I think. ole joyful ... nothing like getting a useful piece of equipment, that works efficiently ... at no cost (above a staple/clear sticky tape) P.S. If it gets dusty, cut a piece of an old sheet long enough to glue it along one side of the box and wide enough to go over the top and drop down over the front. Then, when you need to dust - just blow! If you're enough of a blow-hard to blow out some recipes ... or damage the box ... invite a neighbour for coffee and prevail upon her/(him?) to take care of the task, O.K.?
