Layout Help- Master Bath
Comments (6)UPDATE: The exterior measurements are as follows: 12.5 x 14.5 [with a 2 x 6 bumpout]. I have added the interior measurements as well for each wall in the below drawing. The closets seem on the small side, but we are upgrading from having a 5' x 2' reach in closet space so these will seem HUGE to us. Our current master bath is 5' x 7' -- so small that DH uses the hall bath instead. The house is 1600 sq ft now, and will be 2200 sq ft [on two main floors] after the addition. And, the master bath is all new contruction, and there are no plumbing restrictions at all, no window placement restrictions at all either. The exterior measurements cannot change; the master bedroom door location cannot change. What I like about this plan - 2 sinks, large shower, no view into bath/windows from the bedroom, separate closets, separate toilet room. I am ok with a toilet/shower combo room, and could be persuaded to make due with a shared closet space. This plan seems to include some wasted space in the hallway and the toilet room. A better use of space is what would be best. Thanks for helping!...See MoreHelp Updating Bathroom - x-Post
Comments (7)Hey I have that same bathroom, which I am in the beginning stages of remodeling. Since tub/showers seem to be hated, I am sure I am going to be in the minority. After much thought, we are keeping the tub/shower. Here is our line of thinking. We have a six year old. She takes a bath and this is her bathroom. It was a pain to bathe her in the big tub in the master. Hurts the back to reach in that far down. Since she is young she wonÂt have any issue stepping over the tub to use it as a shower when she is older. I know the general rule is that a house has to a have a tub somewhere, but I really think, if you have a house that will be occupied by young children that a tub is necessary in their bathroom. As a mother I wouldnÂt buy one with just a shower in the kids bathroom and a tub in the master. JMO. As for a step in being ideal for visiting seniors, this is true, but since they are just visiting, we prefer the house to work for the people who are here the majority of the time. I have seen some beautiful showers done in bathrooms like ours, link, but it just wouldnÂt be practical in our situation. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/bath/msg0311095824390.html?24 Look at msgreatdealÂs shower....See MorePlease help my tiny hideous master bedroom!!
Comments (135)omg, I just got so happy with my bedroom and today the demo on the adjoining master bath began and it has all gone to hell so fast! I know it will all be worth it but holy cow, what an ungodly mess. The DUST, the dust!! I'm going to head out and buy five--ten more of those huge thin plastic drop cloths tomorrow first thing just to protect furniture in other rooms from all the dust. I doubt I could make those shades, but perhaps I will try... my mom is visiting this week and she is an absolute genius with a sewing machine. Maybe I'll see if she is game.:)...See MoreMaster suite or guest bath + remodel?
Comments (5)Thanks for your input. The budget is $25-30K, in Los Angeles. That's about twice what we went into this "wanting" to spend. I'm not expecting to recoup the entire cost, but we're in a rapidly changing neighborhood with rapidly escalating home prices, so it's not totally outside the realm of possibility. It's also possible that we could stay much longer than I think. We bolted the foundation, restored/replaced the hardwood floors, removed/hid the popcorn ceilings, and widened the bedroom closet doors last year when we moved in. We got off easy on the asbestos, but doubled our costs when we found out all of our gas lines and half our electrical needed to be replaced ASAP. So yeah, I'm worried that our 20% contingency cushion won't cut it this time either. Option 2 opens onto the laundry alcove that is directly off the kitchen. I agree, it's not ideal. It is also more limiting in terms of potential future projects like a kitchen remodel. I'm really leaning toward the master suite. Additional storage will come from a built-in bench in the dining room window bay, custom surrounds for the laundry and refrigerator, and--who am I kidding?--probably a larger shed as well. Never buy a house without a garage....See MoreSissy Mizzell
