Comments (5)Mosaics are more expensive than field tiles because of the extra cutting, finishing and matting. Smaller mosaics *can* be cheaper than larger mosaics because they are most often cut from the waste generated from fabricating 12"x12" dimensional stone tiles. You get more pieces out of the waste from smaller tesserae. You will find that it can be less expensive to buy 12"x12" (most common size and so the cheapest to buy) tiles of the stone you are considering and cut the mosaic pieces yourself? Even if you have your installer cut all of the pieces, you can still sometimes save money over buying the mosaic pre-assembled AND you'll have a very unique installation. Here are two examples of when I've been asked to make my own tiles to suite the customer's design. This first was a French limestone from Ann Sacks which had been discontinued after the tile for the house's flooring have been purchased. This fireplace was an afterthought and the client wanted "something" which tied the fireplace into the flooring. I never throw away my cutting waste until after the job's wrapped up so I went through the piles and sorted by colors. Then I looked at the dimensions I had to work with and pitched this concept. The client loved it and I was able to give her what she wanted and we didn't have to spend anything on additional tile. This next one is a curbless walk-in shower I built recently where the designer wanted to use a combination of 12"x12" tiles and 3.75"x3.75" tiles of the same material, but the smaller tiles weren't available in this stone. For this shower I cut a bit over 1,200 3.75"x3.75" tiles, which only took me a day to accomplish. Again, a unique product and considerable savings as similar stone in the dimension the designer wanted were more expensive. Best of luck, Shaughnn...See MoreSource for large vein-cut tiles in DC area?
Comments (8)Daltile carries it - both the vein cut limestone and marble. When I was looking for the marble, they were the only source locally other than Flor and Decor (which had a better price than Daltile). Both were special order. 6x24, 6x36 and 8x36. They had it in silver beige and white carrara. It is BEAUTIFUL - we are doing it in our main powder room and master bath. From the Daltile site looks like these are in your area. Comments (3)Crossville's Buenos Aries moods, in 'Polo'. Available textured, honed or polished type finishes, has a slight swirl of other color for a stone look, but comes as a 24x24. Really though, you are spoiled for choice-- almost every company offers something along these lines....See MoreColor savants, please help (photos)
Comments (7)I call myself the "color police"! I had my colors done more than 20 years ago and I'm one of those nutty people who is a winter! I stick to my colors (for my clothes) all the time. Crisp, cool colors look best on my skin tone. I don't have the money to keep my color rules to most of my condo, but I do for my kitchen floor. I love a very light colored floor in the kitchen. For 22 years, I've had a bright white floor in my kitchen and it always looks great and clean. I see so many people on youtube and in other places making mistakes about color. Taupe is one of them. Taupe is a neutral for me. If you Google taupe, you will get a lot of different opinions on the color. A true taupe is a gray-brown. You can have a taupe in light, medium, or dark. Here are cool colors: bright white, ice cool pastels, black, gray, taupe, silver, royal blue, pine green, forest green, kelly green, purple, cool red. Warm colors: ivory, cream, off-white, warm red, tan, brown, olive green, golden yellow, gold, orange, peach. I think a room should be all cool colors or all warm....See MoreMegan Marelich
