Why is classic gray looking beige?

We are building a new home and had to pick paint colors without seeing samples on the walls and before any flooring was down. I tried to play it safe by choosing classic gray for the majority of the house. Now that it’s painted I’m freaking out with how beige it looks, particularly in this room. We’ll have light gray carpet and white curtains and obviously less natural sunlight. How do you think this will change the look of the walls?

I do think the colors will look a little different once you have your flooring in and the walls are reflecting light from the floor, but Ben Moore "Classic Grey" is more of a warm beige-gray than a cool gray in most lighting. I don't like cold grays, so personally I think it looks great, but I can see why you're concerned if your carpeting is a cool gray. Did you look at the paint samples propped vertically next to your carpet samples before choosing to go with those colors? I also think your other colors look great, but then I like warm whites...

Someone else may be able to advise you on what type of lighting might give you more of the affect you were looking for when you chose your paint colors.

I also did cloud white in a playroom downstairs (hardwood will be a light/medium maple). It looks super yellow too?? :(

Another picture of the Master bedroom. Same day/time, just different phone camera. This one looks REALLY beige. Nothing I can do about the paint colors now, just hoping someone can comment if the colors will start to look different once flooring and furniture is in!

I'm a huge fan of grays. You see it in many Swedish inspired homes and it works well with many brick or stone exteriors as an accent for shutters and such. I don't see the COLD gray of the 60's being used.. but a much warmer, river rock type of gray. All that being said.. certain beige colors are indispensable if a home is dark naturally. I'm a Realtor, and we stage all of our listings. My back ground is design.. so I do have many ' tried and true ' colors we use for resale. Can't tell you how often I get asked for the names of the paint colors.. ! NOTE: Which way a room/ house faces is how I typically choose where to go color wise. The beiges I use are not as gold / yellow in base tone.

Without seeing the floors, it’s very hard to say, but somewhere in this post you can see my wood look tiles in my bathroom which are gray and it looks awesome. I would recommend getting a sample and putting it up in the basement. Since I assume there is very little natural light, the tone will largely depend on your lighting. If your flooring has a warm gray tone to it, it will probably look great. If it has a bluish cool gray tone to it, you’d have to see how it looks side by side. Hope this helps a little! I think it looks fine. I have whole foyer and first floor painted in BM Balboa Mist and I love it. It’s a little more griege that the classic grey, so maybe that’s why it looks cool to me, but if you are looking for grey and not greige, then it totally works. I think it looks great with your cabinets and the floors! This article is really good at parsing up the greys and their pros and cons. cdisimone - I have very similar color cabinets and granite in my kitchen except my backsplash is lighter and floors are very dark porcelain, wood look tile. I've been looking for a color that will work throughout the majority of my house too. After weeks of deliberating, I started with my dining room and painted Shoji White last night. Not sure I like it....it does not look warm or creamy in my house at all. It looks like a very light cool gray. :-( I was going more for a warm white so I can brighten things up but still have the warm, cozy feel. I'm going to give it a few days before continuing on through the rest of my house. My suggestion is to paint an entire wall or much larger sample on your wall before deciding!

Thanks! No we didn’t have the option to hold up paint colors next to flooring samples when we picked everything. It was very scattered and cut short due to the start of the pandemic so I just had to go with what I thought would work together. Yes hopefully the gray carpet cools the room down a bit, or maybe it will make the paint color even warmer?

Yep, it kind of is. If you compare it to some warm beige tones it's going to appear gray, but it is definitely not one of the cool grays that is trendy right now. I like it much better than those grays personally and find it.... classic ;)

We painted the exterior of our home "Nantucket Gray" which isn't really gray in the traditional sense, but a muted sage green. Just because "gray" is in the name of a paint color does not mean it will look gray in your space.

Anne LaPorte, how do you like it in your house now that your flooring is in? I hope you love it, or at least have grown to like it.
