Cryptomeria japonica 'tansu'
Comments (24)Thanks, ds. The problem with planting in-ground (in my yard) is twofold: heliotropism and deer. First, I like to turn my plants often - very often - sometimes to encourage the plant to take a "set," sometimes to avoid a "set." In-ground, I lose that option. Second, the deer. I could cage this tree, but I don't really have a place for a caged tree in the proper areas of the yard. I might consider a wooden growing box, indeed. I potted this Tansu up not long ago, so I'll go ahead and let it fill this terra cotta container with roots - then I'll bump it up again. Last spring, my first spring with the tree, I did pinch out the long and/or large-needled growth. I look forward to the flush of new growth this year! Thanks again, Josh...See MoreAnyone know if Cryptomeria Japonica is tolerant of juglone?
Comments (3)I have a radicans I planted 2 years ago under a black walnut- just to see if it would survive. It hasn't grown much, but it's still healthy and green. (Surprising, given the brutal winter we had) My other Yoshinos (not near the black walnut) took a couple of years before they really started putting on new growth. So maybe I'll find out this year. I love this tree because the deer don't touch it....See MoreCryptomeria japonica on Parade - Please
Comments (15)All are very nice photo's which are posted here. Some quiestions/comments: Stephen, Did you cut your 'Mushroom' and 'Yokohama'once in a while? They looked bin cut. Clément, 'Yata Dusa' is not a correct cultivar name, in my opinion it must be 'Yatsubusa' which lookes very much, if not the same as 'Yokohama'. Some in my collection: 'Araucarioides' 'Broom' 'Compacta' 'Dinger' This is a 'Dacrydioides' witches'broom found in 2002 in Holland at the Dennenhorst Pinetum and is named after the owner of this Pinetum. 'Little Champion' This witches'broom is also found in Holland. It's found on a 'Gracilis' by The Boskoop nurseryman Wout Huizer....See MoreCryptomeria japonica Sekkan-sugi size?
Comments (6)Does seem to have some problems with exposure on some open sites, producing forking shrubby growth and/or burnt foliage tips. Positively ethereal in a spot such as a sunny woodland glade, where it is also likely to grow better. One in Seattle was over 17 ft. tall by 2006, I think I have seen other significantly taller elsewhere in this region. Definitely arborescent once established and doing well, but too new to gardens here to have grown large - and probably not vigorous enough to get as big as a typical green seedling....See MoreRelated Professionals
