medium gray grout for black hex floor tile?

Looking for the “truest” gray that will make hex pop but still hide dirt. Suggestions?

I have the same question. In my case, I’m trying to decide on grout for Nero marquina marble hex tiles. The tiles look like a dark gray to me, not quite a true black. I was thinking a medium gray but not sure.

Same boat. Trying to decide by this afternoon. I dint want true white or black, thinking Delorean gray or pewter from Home Depot. I want help with hiding dirt, but I also want contrast.

It might not even look awesome after you mop. I physically shuddered when I looked at that inspiration floor. I'm betting the only time that floor looked like that was for that photo. Grease and food stains in a kitchen are one thing, but in a bathroom - well, you want to hope that's hair product or water, but... If this was a powder room that was used only occasionally, maybe, but teenagers? You are a brave woman. Otoh, you COULD use it as a disciplinary tool - listen to me, or else I'll make you clean all the spots off of your bathroom floor.... Could you pick up a couple of sheets of the tile and "dirty" them up a little? See how much it bothers you?

Although normally, I'd recommend going with a lighter shade of gray, I think to do that now would show a difference-- as in we tried this shade on the walls and didn't like it so we changed it for the floor. I'd say you have one of two choices-- either score out the grout on the walls and redo it with a lighter shade (or you could use a grout colorant) and use the lighter shade for the floor, OR you could leave the walls as is, and use the delorean gray for the hex tile, as well.

I would want the finished grout to be a medium gray, light gets dirty no matter how often you clean it. Having said that and from personal experience, I would pick a darker grey and hope when it is done it is at least medium in color. In our previous house we had tile professional laid and grout applied. I picked a medium grey grout, but not sure what happened, the grout was a very very light grey after it dried. Either the installer used too much water or what , not sure. In this house, my DH decided to do a back splash in our bathroom downstairs. We picked a light grey brick tile, and I picked a medium grey grout. We were careful not to use too much water when cleaning the grout off, but again the darker grey color I thought I was getting was a much lighter grey. I dont know what it is about grey grout but be careful.

I agree with chispa, darker grout will show installation imperfections and will look really busy. I'd go with a light-medium color. It will be more forgiving when it comes to keeping it clean looking. White will be nice and subtle. Personally, I love subtle: let the texture be the interesting pattern, not the color. But if you're tiling behind a stove, it might be troublesome to keep it clean. Here is a darker medium: And a lighter medium (personally I like this one):

The only way to know for sure is for each of you to tile a board with excess floor tile and then try the colors for grout. Give it a couple days to dry, and decide.

I ended up using Mapei Timberwolf and it turned out really nice. It looks pretty light next to the almost black Nero Marquis’s but it is definitely more of a medium gray. I did Mapei warm gray on my white subway tiles which is a much lighter gray. I don’t have a photo at the moment but hopefully this video will load.
