Molly, Thanks but it really does give me vertigo (or something similar, I literally get queasy). The house I saw today was empty but the one that I came close to buying was fully furnished and slightly cluttered (no that part does not bother me) and it bothered me so much that I declined to make an offer after fully intending to. Your post really did explain one thing, when I first saw the house in September it really did not seem bad except in one end room which would have been one of my kids. So I had decided I could probably deal with it. Then it was not available and became available again in February so did a walk through before making an offer and the vertigo thing really bothered me all over the upstairs. I thought it was the pressure of having to make a decision (other people were also bidding) that was making every flaw stand out. Maybe it was the difference between late summer and mid winter in terms of the rotation. Thanks for the explanation although it does not give me as much comfort that the problem can be fixed Yes Sue I often bring a marble especailly when going back for a second look or sometimes an actual level. The furnished house was way off. I am so sensitive to it that I can usually tell when I walk into a room and the marble and level always confirm it. DH of course thinks I am nuts for so many reasons

Here are some option i found on the web. An elegant room with a cream ceiling and sloping sections. Pretty. All gray on all surfaces. Doesn’t float my boat, YMMV. White wall with some sort of faux finish on the sloped and flat parts of the ceiling. Green walls with green striped sloped area an darker color defining to top flat part. Pretty and elegant with what looks like off white walls and white slope and flat ceilings. The nice molding help this look. Maybe not the same as your situation, put shown with danger toned color on gable end walls and lighter on walls, slopes and ceiling on the rest. Charming. Walls painted beige with white slope and ceiling. Simple but effective. I don’T recommend this style of widow treatment however So there are lots of way to handle the ceiling and slopes, depending on your wall color, how much contrast you want how much you want to direct attention upward or do you have other elements in the room that you want for a main focal point of the design. Also your style and furniture choices may influence your decision. post pictures for more help.

I don't know where these figures come on the amount allocated to furnishing a home. In my experience, if you are buying your first home, you are going to be strapped for cash - at least for the first year or so. Most people I know made do with donations; thrift store acquisitions, odds and ends accumulated along the way and disposable furniture from places like IKEA - or they made do without. If one is moving to a second or third home, surely one has acquired furniture along the way and doesn't immediately discard it. Again, in my experience, most people with middle class incomes make do with already existing furniture and augment as needed. While it's nice to get new stuff, most people I know bought furniture gradually.

Doing the same to a home I am fixing up. I have seen some decals of trees that fit nicely onto the slanted walls but maybe more age appropriate for kids room. I have decided to ignore them for the most part...but I did mirror the angles in the pattern of the area rug in one room. Did you paint the "low hanging" section to match the wall color or the ceiling color? The top two are mine, the last 3 are ideas online that i found i liked.
