We originally had grand plans for our master bath, which included moving the toilet, and creating a separate room for it. Well, after talking to a few contractors and seeing the costs, we're in need of an alternative plan that doesn't involve moving plumbing on a slab foundation. So our bathroom look like this right now. With the 1985 builder grade furnishings. The vanity currently opens into the master bedroom, and we definitely want to close that up. Any other ideas on making this bathroom more modern?

I realize that was your question, but you might not want to ignore your small toilet room. I think you tub looks fine. You can do it built in, or choose a slipper tub that stands alone, or. What do you like? Have you spent any time on Houzz looking at pictures of master baths with an oval tub? Houzz is very easy to search with almost any search term you choose.

Look for Cambrian Black and see if you like it better. It has a little more character to it than AB. I have marble in my kitchen, but like you, I'm not sure if I want it in the bathroom. My cultured marble has stained enough to turn me off, but the real thing isn't stained. Etching is an uncertainty in the bathroom for me. With your tub and tile, I do like the idea of keeping the choices black and white -- but I have always loved that vintage B/W bath look. IF you don't find a granite or marble you love, don't miss some of the new marble look alikes that have been coming out recently. I saw Silestone's and others on this forum have been talking about Ceasarstone and maybe another one. They have come a long way and are probably worth considering. I know I am. I like the idea of different mirrors and I've seen his and hers that are different on different walls, but generally not on the same wall. I am a right/left brain person so I do things both ways, but I generally try to make them make sense to other people. Now, in your bathroom, most folks will never see it, so who cares if it makes others cock their heads. Easy enough to change out a mirror or two when it's time to move. As it's pictured, this is an awkward bathroom. I don't see a shower fitting into this corner -- I think you've gotta start from scratch and re-design this whole thing: - I never like toilet-in-a-closet designs; note that this one is about the same size as a public toilet stall -- those things aren't comfortable. The issue here is that when the toilet door is left open (which will be often), it blocks your main entrance to the bathroom. - The closet door in the center is preventing you from putting the shower on one side of the bathroom, which would be the most logical choice. My best stab at it -- and I don't think it's 'specially good: This does place the sink, the most-used item in the bathroom, immediately by the door. It tucks the toilet behind a wall, meaning it's hidden from view but it removes the problem of the conflicting doors and gives you more room for comfort. The shower is quite large, and the door is out of the way. And you're left with enough space for a wide linen closet adjacent to the shower. By moving the closet door a bit to the side, the shower fits in a more logical spot (more logical than the NE corner). Another thought -- simplify and reduce the space, allowing for a larger closet, yet you still have all the pieces you need:
